External digestion is rarely seen in aquatic environments (the mechanics of external digestion are really meant for use on land). How ever, this is a beautiful illustration.

true rarely seen but not completely unheard of, starfish, sea cucumbers and couple other echinoderms feed similar to this. I'm glad you find it beautiful and i appreciate the interest in my designs!!

Well, star fish at any rate do, and I completely forgot about that. Good point! Perhaps the tongue is covered in ciliated grooves that carry food to pores along the length of the tongue. The pores take the food inside the tongue where it can be digested and absorbed?
