Thank you Nick! This tree really was huge and from what I understand about oak trees probably a couple of hundred years old...

Golden Lichen fingers, reaching for the sun, their knarly knotted knuckles leave an evil feel for some...

Yet as the sunbeams make their magic in the auroa of the tree
I imagine fairies dancing, all the sprites are running free

Celebrating winter's sunshine, knowing spring is next to come
Deep within each bough and branch the magic has begun...

sometimes pictures do that for me, I see a poem and write it

thank you

Dunno why I'm looking at this, it's just a tree. Slightly odd-coloured tree even.
Some sun behind the tree as well, probably a few thousand of them on dA. Every
kid with a cam has one. So why am I looking at this again, does the tree have
something extra or should I have dropped the last glass of red wine? Well, there's
something about it.

It must be the eerie silhouette, the snow(?) on the branches with the backlight that
makes it look almost moss-like, as a dead tree getting overcome with moss, yet this
tree doesn't seem to be dying. It's making a stand. Maybe against the thousands
of other dull tree pictures, maybe against winter, maybe against nature. Maybe
it's just standing there, but it does one heck of a good job. The greenish tint to the
picture (I'm guessing this picture has gotten curve treatment) gives it the mysterious
hue of old nature, one of the LotR-fanboys might even cry "ENT". So yes, there's
something to it. And I've written a lot of illogical mess, but I could do worse.

Oh, and Advanced Critique... well, I suspect the cut is to hide the house on the left,
and that's ok, but it would be ok to see the top of the tree I think, unless of course there's
a power or telephone wire there. More height would've added a more towering and possibly
majestic feel to it, but that might not've been intended and there's only so much that
can be fit into a 35mm camera. Great job

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write your thoughts and I am happy that you find something interesting about this photo

The greenish colors you see on the trees is actually an abundant amount of lichen that grows on many of the trees in the area.. My camera has been being a bit bad lately and has been underexposing my shots, so I did have to adjust the levels a bit to bring the lighting closer to where it should have been, but then I desatured the photo a bit since I liked it better with just the hint of color, rather then bright outlines..

The little portion on the left side of the tree is, I believe, housing for a water pump... There were powerlines around the tree, and newly constructed houses around, as well as trees behind me so that I could not back up any more, but I think turned out OK dodging as much as I could

There is a minor crop on the image just to straighten the tree out about, but I did not intentially try to crop out the building since it would have made the tree look lopsided

Thank you again for taking your time to comment, I greatly appreciate it!

I just tried to write my comment in a slightly different way, and I'm happy to
have been given some insight in the process you use.

And yeah, trying to avoid houses, power-lines and stuff all sounds very familiar.
An example is my winterdream entry where there is a silly house ruining the
serenity of nature, but a shallow DOF more or less hides it. Normally I'd use
a lot more DOF in a landscape

Oh and yes, the desaturating you did worked really well. Thumbs up

I get mixed emotions from this shot... on the one hand i think its kinda scary and errie, on the other it has a "tree of life" feel.
Love the sunrays seeping through, a very nice extra.
Im wondering what that is in the bottom left corner, looks abit like a tombstone...

vividlilac In reply to SinisteR-NL [2004-12-26 23:49:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Bob, I am very happy you like this!

I had thought that that bit in the corner looked like a tombstone too and thought it was kinda of neat thinking that.. but in reality it is part of a water shed, lol.. I didn't want to crop the photo to hide it, and couldn't have moved the angle over since there were powerlines and houses..

Absolutely wonderful...the shimmer of sunlight tracing the many old snow-covered veins of this tree reaching up to the sky is very kickass. I'm glad you kept this color - it's warmth really wouldn't be caught in a B& W scenario.

Thank you very much Sterling!!

I wish it would have snowed while I was there, but alas, this location was too low to get any.. What looks like snow is actually a very interesting type of lichen (maybe Oakmoss lichen, but I am not sure)... in the winter a lot of the trees in Oregon become covered with lichen and moss, especially White Oaks..

Very nice! The exposure must have been just spot on, the exposure lattitude is great, there's still some color in the sky while the foreground is exposed properly. Was there alot of post-work done on this? Some of the lower branches look almost like a painting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vividlilac In reply to DivineSpiral [2004-12-26 21:54:33 +0000 UTC]

I have actually been having a bit of problems with my cam (sending it in tomorrow ) where it has been underexposing, so I had to lighten it up a bit using levels and then used a bit of saturation to being some of the color back out.. the most is actually brighter, but I liked how the more subdued colors looked...

The painting look may be from the moss.. there are actually 2 types of moss that are growing on the tree.. one a soft, dark green, and another almost seafoam green that is kind of leafy, which is the one on most of the tree
