Description 'Slytherin!' cried the Sorting Hat.

And Severus Snape moved off to the other side of the Hall, away from Lily, to where the Slytherins were cheering him, to where Lucius Malfoy, a prefect badge gleaming upon his chest, patted Snape on the back as he sat down beside him...

Well, I should have re-read the English version first. Because in French it was rather translated like : ' And Lucius put a hand onto Snape's shoulder'.

I really wanted to do something with this scene, anyway. It struck me when I read it the first time.

I love Lucius and Severus and headcanon them to be quite close, especially considering the lengths Severus went for their family. I believe it all started with this, his easy acceptance into Slytherin with Lucius guiding him... Even if it eventually led to the wrong path, it makes me feel like Severus' school years couldn't have been entirely awful, he must've had friendship or a concept of family inside Slytherin which he needed so badly.

A tumblr user had an interesting concept. She said that Slytherin seems to put a lot of value on loyalty and "true frienship" and also other sources noted how tight knit and accepting Slytherin is. Anyway, this tumblr user has the idea that the sorting hat sometimes puts you into houses where you can blossom or grow or will find the best happiness, not just based on personality - for example Neville would grow to be braver in Gryfinndor than he would Hufflepuff like he wanted to be in. She suggested that perhaps the attention and frienship craved Severus needed Slytherin - a place to belong and have an accepting family.

i just thought it was interesting. this picture makes me think of it and it's probably my favorite just because it has two of my absolute favorite Hp characters in it <3Β

Interesting thoughts. Severus and Lucius are complex characters who are not completly "evil" but not classical "good" as well and I do not like it if people try to portray them too onesided.
Snape is absolutly Slytherin. He may be a gentle, calm and very inteligent person but he is also easy angry, interested in the dark arts and has no problems to be mean if not sardistic to people he don't like. We never read how he was in his twenties but it's very possible with his success in knowlegde and the power it gives him that he liked to use it against all the people and the society who never really accepted him.
Lucius maybe infulenced him but it's totally possible that Severus would have joined the Deatheaters without him. The whole Lucius tricked him into it is too banal. Yes Lucius is always looking for opportunities but Severus was a first year halfbloodΒ  with no money. The scene in the book refers more that he cares as the slytherin perfect and how Severus found a "home" in his house like you two so wonderful described.

The problem is more the very onesided way Rowling portraied the houses. I understand that if you want huge success you have to look what is in generaly and morally the main ideal of the society but to initalise one house as the ultimate ideal good, one as evil and one as loosers is one of the reasons why I could never have been a true hardcore fan (though I like the general idea and lots of characters).
I don't start a discussion about the vilians and dark magic here but I have automatically to roll my eyes if I read/hear chosen one, children forming an army and constantlyΒ  winning against well trained adults,...etc. Without the stories around Snape, the Malfoys and the Marauders the books weren't nearly that good in my opinion.

The Sorting HatΒ puts you into Houses where you can blossom and/or according to your personality, I believe. In the case of Severus, he could have been in Ravenclaw but not entirely because he doesn't use his capacities only for science but also as a way to become powerful; he could have been a Gryffindor for his courage and loyalty but the way he is brave and decided to reach his goals is more Slytherin than Gryffindor. For me he is a pure Slytherin and would not have been well accepted in the other Houses, when he could obtain at least some respect and understanding from the other Slytherins.

Lucius visibly helped him and had a great influence in his destiny, maybe not always for the best... but Severus made the wrong choices on his own anyway...

You know, I think Madam Pomfrey was the nurse during Snape school days, too. I can imagine her adoring this little, awkward, angry boy and trying to give him hugs at certain times of his life while he's being all "No, no, madam. Please, stop... Mmm..."

This Snape you draw fits perfectly in my mind's Snape-Being-Hug. Perhaps because Lucius is grabbing his shoulder?

I like this a lot. You're pretty good at backgrounds, too!!

Browsing through your gallery to find some kneeling and sneering images of SS for inspiration... and I come across this. How come I haven't faved it yet?
Nice shifty eyes on SS, the uncomfortable squirming he's doing, also Lucius's forced (?) smile... Speaking of Lucius, is it just me, or does he look... like an Elf of all things? Must be the shape of the ears.

Your young Snape is so well done...and I just love his elfin ears. Lucius too, in his always passive way, looks to be already considering his uses.

Vizen In reply to MistressBlackwater [2010-09-07 19:37:51 +0000 UTC]

haha, yes: I don't know why, but a few times I wanted to add elfin ears to him. He would be a good elf, for me. . As a vampire, too, of course - would look good

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MistressBlackwater In reply to Vizen [2010-09-08 01:21:42 +0000 UTC]

I agree! He has many features which would translate well to the elfin realm. I rather like it too. Of course, he's a classical vampire...which I don't mind at all. I would actually like to write a fic about a vampire Snape...though of course Canon disproves it, I still think it'd be fun to do something in that...if you'll pardon the pun, vein.

I think the French translation, 'And Lucius put a hand onto Snape's shoulder', is actually better, it kinda shows Snape is being claimed by Slytherin and dragged away from Lily... or maybe that's just me xD

I love this drawing! You can really empathise with poor little!Snape

Vizen In reply to Mexylove [2010-06-08 09:51:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I read first the English version, at its release, and only later the French translation and after all this time, what has remained in my head was this French variant and not the English one - precisely because of its symbolism, the claim it implies. I was even surprised when I looked for the original version for the artist's comment and noticed that what I thought was not entirely the original version

oh, ok It's from book 7 ( chapter 33 'the Prince's Tale' ) . In this chapter, Harry discovers Severus Snape's old memories. Severus Snape at 11 is sorted into Slytherin. His childhood friend, Lily Evans, has been sorted into Gryffindor. Severus goes to Slytherin table, where the Prefect Lucius Malfoy welcomes him. Little Severus in my pic looks at his new Slytherin tie, he's sad because Lily is not with him in Slytherin.

thanks a lot!!!

I don't really know how people become illustrators. I mean, I guess you should have some degree/diploma of art school and have the proper network of relationships... The not private Art schools in Paris (where I live) are only for -25 years old students!!!! And I'm already older I'm not aware of this milieu and I have always in mind that it's impossible for outsiders to get a place in such a world.

Thank you very much for your cheerful comment!
