Whooooo! My first ever mecha artwork -- EVER. :-D Also probably the second piece of fanart in my entire gallery, hahaha. I know it's very different to what I normally draw but we've all gotta challenge ourselves sometime, right?It took me a while because I wasn't used to so many goddamn straight lines... but ah, we got there in the end. I wanted to go for something simpler, darker. It's not that shabby for a first effort, so I'm quite pleased.
For those of you who don't know(!!), this is a fanart of Evangelion Unit 01 from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion . NGE is and has always been my very favourite anime of all time; I think it's just phenomenal. The series also propelled me to draw when I first saw it as a child and was an enormous influence in my earlier artwork.

EVA units are not mecha, they're a different species of humans.

Well, actually, Units 00 and 02 are made from Lillith's DNA, and Unit 01 supposedly from Adam's, so they're not "human" per say. However, just because they're biological does not exclude them from being considered "mechs". They're still mechanized, they still have pilots. The Zoids series also pushes the same boundary, since the Zoids themselves are techno-organic life-forms, yet are still considered mechs.
I think the term "mech" is kinda ambiguous these days with series like Zoids and Eva. It can range from a full-fleged robot like a Gundam to a cyborg thing like an Eva

Been browsing your page, and I could not possibly fit all the things I like into my faves column lol.
Yet, I am partial to giant robots. Always have been. I always wanted to watch NGE, but never had the time/opportunity. I love series within this genre like Gundam, Big O, Voltron, Transformers, and Escaflowne. I have seen lots of artwork for NGE, and this is most definately one of my favorite renderings of the mech. Thanks for sharing this!

I love the coloring!! I love how it looks messy.
NGE was one of the greatest animes ever. Confusing as heck, but still awesome. Plus, Unit 01 was quite positively the coolest mech to ever exist. I have yet to see one better.
