Lovecraft is hard to get through at times, the flowery style sometimes reminds me of Clark Ashton Smith. What mostly bugs me is that Lovecraft assumes everyone is a total puss just waiting to faint whenever they hear an odd noise or stray shadow.
Keep in mind I love Lovecraft and his imagery of squamous idols within cyclopean cities but I prefer Lumley (or even Derlethian) style characters as they make more sense to me. If only REH could have taken Lovecraft under his wing and man him up a bit.
The world vision though is Lovecrafts masterwork, from the isolated offices of mans civilization reaching into the darkness of an ever growing savage and chaotic culture comes horror. From the Congo, to the inbred towns of Innsmouth, the key to knowledge is through savagery and barbarism...a horrific concept to a post Victorian mindset.
