what for? pets here are always cooped up in the house and never let out (unless, they either escape or are abandoned to the streets)there's no real reason to tag a pet... and besides, most people here buy birds or fish. cats are very rare to see as pets...

I can understand why most people wouldn't own a dog. They can be a little bit of a resource hog if you're not careful. Back home, my family has five dogs that all LOVE their food, one of which is a Great Dane. Though, we acquired all our dogs as rescues from bad situations. Except for the oldest, which my mother bought for herself as a present nearly 10 years ago.
XD But I do find it interesting that people over there don't have tags for their pets. Is it just something that never really caught on, or do the people in the communities tend to know what animal belongs to who?

it's generally because 90 percent of the populace just don't own pets at all... or if they do, it's usually birds. and the 10 percent that do have pets, just keep them cooped up in the house and don't allow them to go out in the street.
for us, it's because we raise our pets in the yard, and all of them (the cats, I mean) are wild strays that were either rescued or born their by a mother we rescued beforehand. they basically just live in our yard because they know it's the safes one there to live and have kittens, plus there's always easy food (leftover and dry catfood on occasion) when they get older, most of them move away to live wild, or stick around fora few years until they move out... or get hit by a car... (not much respect for animals here to begin with, really... unless you're a pigeon or something eatable...)

(I bet where you're from you don't have people taking their dogs to get groomed, be pet sit, taken to doggie dinners, be treated as children by wearing clothes and even have their own carriers.... yeah, we're just that crazy in the United States... well, some people are.)

no dogs (except for the really rich people...) and no, none of that fancy stuff here. best you'll find is a poor house cat with no personality being tormented by the kids and forced to wear ribbons and bells and getting called "susu", "fufu", "puss-puss" or "biss-biss" which are the names 100% of all house cats end up being named here.
I swear, the day I found one that was actually named "Fulla" (Arabic work for Jasmine) I nearly had a stroke from the shock of it actually being original!

It's funny when people call pets by their actual species's name (dog = Dog and cat = Kitty). And honestly, I think those people who do all that stuff I listed are a little.. special, though I know people who do it. Certain dogs do need sweaters because of how cold things get (mainly poor Chihuahuas :/ ) but ones who wear other clothes.... like a couple who've had MINI WEDDINGS done for them (complete with bride and groom outfits)... yeah, that's nuts. Our dog was just the family dog and hunting dog whom I put my old soccer jersey on a few times for Halloween, but that's it.
But yeah, we name our pets people names though there ones like naming the cat Puss, Blackie or something like that. I can't imagine all the cats suffering from identity crisis over where you live, haha. So many duplicates how does each one know who is being called!? (be like when you have people with the same name in a work place or school. You have to call them by a nickname or say like "James C" and "James K.") Or just do the generic call that everyone does when trying to "summon" a cat over to them: here kitty, kitty, kitty.
I 'have' a cat (she doesn't live with me at my house, she's on our farm property)... and I named her Hello Kitty... BUT I HAVE A REASON FOR IT! (She never shuts up, being really talkative so it's like she always has to say hello though she's gotten better about it over the years.))
