Heavier than a fighter lighter than a corvette the Assault gunship fills a need for long range fast reaction firepower. Able to travel between star systems and operate away from base for two to three weeks A Stingship is tasked with delivering a rapid punch against hostile ground force/star ships/facilities. Assult Gunboats are Deployed to bases and depots throughout settled space ( although far more common on the perimeter of settled regions) Stingships are organized more like fighters than a capital ships. Flying from forward bases or using Tender/carriers to increase their striking range.

Due to the tactics and formations used by Stingship squadrons often fighter pilots are assigned to Stingship squadrons rather than Naval Helmsmen.In combat a sting ship will rapidly maneuver into a targets blind spots fire off several dozen rounds from it's heavy weapons and execute high gee maneuvers to escape before the enemy can maneuver to fire on it

To ensure maximum survival rates Sting ships are fitted with excellent armor for their size, electronic countermeasures, and multiple decoys/chaf/flare launchers. In addition they often carry communications and sensor jamming systems or some other means to confuse and disrupt target forces during their initial attack runs.

When deployed to support ground forces often sting ships will spearhead an assault making a high speed ballistic entry using it's heavy guns and missiles to destroy anti-ship defenses , communications facilities and enemy fortifications. Whilenot as effective against dispersed, or mobile targets a sting ship can target and destroy heavy armor and small encampments with acceptable results.

Rarely used for defensive operations Several sting ship squadrons have earned recognition for their ability to rapidly pinpoint command and control assets, and disrupt the enemies supply chain by targeting transports and support vessels smashing though screening fighters and avoiding larger vessels assigned to protect the vulnerable cargo vessels and transport.

The drawbacks of the sting ship are obvious when boarding one. they are small cramped and have only basic crew facilities. With no medical bay or recreation facilities crews become fatigued and loose operational efficiency far more rapidly than on capital ships.

Limited on board spares and maintenance facilities also limit the ships endurance forcing crews to return to a tender or repair facility in the case of serious system failures. this deficiency has led to more than one Stingship being lost when it suffered a critical failure and became stranded far from support vessels.
