Description Sketches for my first portfolio project. Since my degree will be in Zoology & the Masters program I'm applying for is run out of the faculty of (human) Medicine, I want my portfolio to reflect my specialization (animals).

These are nyala (Tragelaphus angasii), an African antelope. I chose them for my subject because a) I like antelope of all varieties, and b) I am fascinated by sexual dimorphism. Nyala bulls are dark, have horns, a crest, and fringe under their throat. The females are red, have no horns, and no crest or fringe. Both sexes have white stripes and nifty dot markings on their faces.

Apparently my brain was time-travelling without me, since the date on the bull portrait should be Dec 30, 2010.... :eyeroll:

Pencil crayons & ink.

Great sketches! (though I have a hard time calling them as such, since their better than at least half of my "drawings"). Love the shading on the cow.

Thanks! I like the cow's colours better personally, but it was fun using purple for the bull...

Gorgeous! It's difficult to get smooth color out of a pencil medium.

Thanks! Haha no kidding... they do make for great fur textures though.

Textures are all the work of the paper. I got this sketchbook with extra thick, kind of gritty pages. It works great with the pencil crayons!

If you're patient enough to color lightly and not mash it all down.

and the sketch on the right is dated 01/30/2010. Is that right? Just wanted to give you a heads up just in case.

These are beautiful! I love the one with the two males.

Not the kind of thing I ever normally bother with but these are exceptionally well done. Amazing sketches; I'm not certain why but they look more 'alive' than a photo!
