Ah, Briar. Briar's book was the first Circle of Magic book I ever read. Last one first, but as it turns out this series didn't matter so much in which order, as there was no overarcing plot. Briar's book is my second favourite of the Circle of Magic, Daja's being my top favourite. The Trader stuff is so interesting.

It's nice to see another Circle of Magic fan.
I re-read those books constantly, and it never stops being fun.

This is cool, especially the last Sandry one! there's almost no Circle of Magic art around here.

lol I know what you mean. I read her Tortall series first, so I'm definitely more attached to them. The Protector of the Small is my favorite. Tho out of Emelan, I'd have to say I prefer the "Circle of Magic" series better than "The Circle Opens" or "The Will of the Empress". Have you read those?

Ah; yeah. I've read all her Emelan books, and I'd have to agree with you; the first four are my favorites...I was so excited about "The Will of the Empress" that when I finished I was a little disappointed with it. Did you feel that it wasn't as good? Or, well, maybe it was just different.

well, I'll have to let you know when I get done with it for a second time. I read it once, when it came out... But, really I didn't care too much for it. It reminded me of the same feelings I had with Trickster's Choice and Queen. I felt her characters were missing...something. Or maybe it was just because I was annoyed with them. I didn't like how Briar, Tris and Daja were so apparently changed by what happened to them that they didn't trust each other enought to "mend the circle" until the very end! I was like "Okay, Tammy, you had just spent the last 8 books saying that these characters depended on the others like siblings, missed them like family, spoke to each other about their troubles, and -NOW- you're saying the first time that they see each other in 4 years, they're suddenly 'ooo terrible things have happened to me, and I don't want you to know about it' with attitudes and other non-sense... and we're suppose to buy that"
Well, at least I think that's what I mean. Or at least that's what irritated me. I mean, Sandry had gone through something tramatic as well, and she was perfectly happy to have her family back together, wanting to help them.... BAH
And now that I think about it, Sandry's book in "The Circle Opens" is pretty good too. And with Aly, I thought for a Tammy heroine, she had a suprising lack of short-comings. Everthing came easy for her.
Bah... I still love the stories, but some more than others. Of course...
sorry for the "novel"...

Though I enjoyed all her books, I have taken issue with some of her later works like the Trickster books and Empress--the villains were lacking. The Empress was ok, would probably be better in a movie, but honestly, there WERE no real villains in the Trickster books. The usurper queen and consort were supposedly the villains I suppose, but we barely saw them. That may be bad writing or bad editing but in the end it makes for a bad story element.

lol I actually finished reading it, for the second time, last night... so now I feel like I can give more of a concise critizism. thoughIstillcompletelyagreewithyou
I found Sandry to be more annoying, almost at par with the others, actually. ^^ and I seemed to have sympathized more with Daja in the beginning then with any of the others. And I mean, surrre, the whole "they were apart for 4 years, and they had terrible experiences that changed them into people who didn't trust easily" is understandable. But, lol I guess it was just annoying. And not the way I wanted it. Which is probably the whole reason why I found it annoying the first time around.
OH, yes! With Briar, I was totally offended when I read it the first time! But, he's a -boy- (not to be sterotypical or anything, but I just think it's not unusual for a guy to be promiscuious more than girls. My apologies if that was offensive...) and with all that Tammy's said about Winding Circle's ideals about sex... it doesn't seem so bad -now-. lol and I knowwww that they're all foster siblings, but I really, REALLY want Briar and Sandry to get together.
It'll probably never happen but still.
And I totally agree that Tammy's writing has gotten better in her newest ones. And have you noticed, they tend to have less romantic tie-ins... or at least it isn't the driving force of the plot.
Though I do have to say, Nawat and Aly... whooo they sure had the steamiest romance.
As for the "briskness", think in Aly's series, the timing was okay. But the Will of the Empress. There was a lack of a real buildup of Berenene as a threat to the four. I know that the breaking of the barrier was suppose to be the big action scene... but it kindof fizzled out. Maybe?

Really? Sandry's annoying too? Man, I've got to reread it. XD Yeah...I remember being so shocked about Briar...but in retrospect, it does make sense. Oh my gosh, I was afraid to bring up foster pairings in case you thought they were "wrong." I actually want Briar to get together with Tris, ahaha. And, as you say---it will probably never happen but still. I'd be happy with Briar and Sandry, probably, too.
Yes, I did notice that...one can hope that she'll just keep getting better, so she can write the last books of the winding circle gang fantastically.
You know, that was what I thought too. Berenene seemed more like...a temporary inconvenience, when compared to the threats of the previous books...which book, by the way, was your favorite out of the Circle Opens four?
Sorry, by the way, that I took forever and a day to get back to you.

whitelyte In reply to tamrunsfree [2007-12-22 21:45:44 +0000 UTC]
let's just say that they all are annoying, at one time or another...
It's so funny how your view on things change the older you get. Chalk one up for the parental I-told-you-so...
LOL dude! Those are the -only- pairings I like. I have yet to find a character that fits well with ANY of the four. I wonder why that is. Tris and Briar would be interesting. I'm not adverse to them, romantically and I do like their dynamics, but they remind me of how me and my brother act sometimes, so I'm more use to seeing them as -actual- siblings. Whereas with Sandry, I see it more as flirting, kindof. Eh
But who knows what Tammy has planned for them.
LOL I'd be excited for -ANY- Tammy books, exceptionally well-written or not! is it 2009 yet?
Maybe she wanted to focus more on the mending of the Circle rather than anything else, but had to present some kindof outside threat to make them get their rear's in gear? lol but I wonder if she won't come back in future CoM stories... because maybe the feeling of inconvience we get from Bernenene (*snicker* it's like how many -ne's are there in her name? We could just end up with "Bernenenenene... eh, that looks like enough" ) means that we're not finished with her. lot: veeeeeeeery interesting.
Um, favorite of the Circle Opens. Well, before I would have said Sandry. But now, I think Briar's and Tris' tie for first. I like Evvy and the relationship she has with Briar. She fits really well with those smarmy plant mages. And Tris. Well, Tris has always been my favorite of the four. And her story was awesome because, well, lol I can't really describe it in 10 words or less. But I liked how it illustrated that Tris was still her cranky self but that she could open up and show people that she really is a nice person. lol I think I like those sterotypes the best. The cranky, mean person with a heart of gold.
.... oy, excuse me for the clichè
I think Daja's story was, eh... okay. I mean, it had action, and humor, (dude, who doesn't love the idea of Frostpine nude in the fireplace? )
But, again, I felt it kindof lacked something. I guess maybe without Sandry, Tris and Briar, Daja really is just a *boring* person. Very solitary.
lol alright, if you made it through -that- novel.... how about you? Your favorite?
Also, you're thoughts on Frostpine? Like/Dislike, Favorite teacher of the four or is there someone else you like better?
lol oh really? It's been forever? Gah, my watch must have stopped around almost forever. Damn...
'sokay... I'm horrible at getting back to people too

Hmm...I'd have to reread them to see where I stand with Briar and Sandry as a pair...but that's the only other pairing I'd consider, too. XD
Is 2009 the date for her next book? Despite my first perception of The Will of the Empress, I'm dying to know what will happen to them next. They're all getting...so much more mature, from the ten year olds we first encounter. *lost in fangirl land for a moment*
Hmm you know what, she probably will be back. And it's true that she could have been just a plot device... lol I know! I remember thinking that when I first saw her name, in whatever book that was.
Oooh, really? I really liked just how interesting Briar's environment was for that book, what with all the roof hopping and the caves. *nod* I like Tris a lot too...I think I might discriminate against Sandry a little, just because she's *cough* a little bit typical sometimes *cough*. Though, again, I'm going from memory.
I think it's because, once she got her new staff, Daja's main self-conflict pretty much ended. For the others, though, their conflicts are ongoing, because...not everyone has Daja's laid back personality? lol I don't know. But, I mean, for Tris, just dealing with other people is a conflict.
My favorite...probably Shatterglass. Because it has Tris. And Niko. And Niko is my favorite teacher out of the four....he's just...so awesome. XD I keep wondering about what he was like when he was young. And, I felt like Shatterglass might have been a little better written than the others, and a lot better than Magic Steps, which was okay, but never really surprised me.
I'm fond of Frostpine, and all the other teachers too. I think I like Briar's relationship with Rosethorn the best, though, just because of how scary she was in the beginning. I like how...the students all sort of match a certain part of their teacher's personality.
ahaha okay...so it was a tiny exaggeration...

Yeah, she mentioned in her LJ that due to writing problems that "Bloodhound" is being pushed back to 2009. We were supposed to have it in 2008. Hopefully, she'll be able to figure out her plot problems and finish by the end of 08.
It would be interesting to ask her about Berenenene...nenenene. But for some reason her scheduling keeps her to the East Coast! I'm quite disappointed about that.
Yeah, the imagery for Briar's book was totally inspiring. Speaking of Briar, have you had a chance to read "Melting Stones"? I haven't but I want to. I was slightly annoyed that it wasn't released until recently in book form, because WotE!Briar eludes so much to it. I do remember reading and thinking "Dude! I don't remember -any- of what he's talking about!"
Lol yeah, Daja really is a laid-back kind of person. Makes a nice mesh with Stubborn, Crabby, and ... Promiscuous? LOL does that fit?
Niko is indeed awesome. The more that I think about it, the more he reminds me of Numair. Just like Frostpine reminds me of Raoul. Like they're each other's equvalents in the two Realms.
And I think I agree that Shatterglass was better written. Maybe Tammy had more time to plan out the plot, or what she wanted to achieve in Tris' character development.
Briar and Rosethorn make such the -best- student/teacher. GAH! I loved how Briar's book totally fleshed them out, relationship-wise.
yup yup... lol goood stuff
