I like the wings the best. I did a drawing similar to this using India ink and water color. Mine was called "Birdy". =]

The shading is superb, no doubt about that, it looks 3-D. That said, in some areas, the feathers are too well defined on the wings, usually they aren't so smooth. The head looks fine, maybe the skull above the beak needs to be higher, bird's head shape doesn't change in that kinda movement, it only appears to change.

I really do like the shading on this! You did a great job with the details, and the overall shading is very smooth. I like how you showed the feathers on the wing, it looks really nice.
I do think the face is a little awkward - I think the problem is that the mouth goes back too far onto the head.
It's still a nice picture!

The face does look a bit odd... I don't think the problem is the length of the mouth, because in the reference I used the length is the same. Maybe it's the shape... I'll have to keep working on it. Thank you for your comment!

The shading and how strong the bird looks is great.
This is drawn so so well.

Technically, this could not be better. I love the highlights even though they seem a bit random. The contrast is well done too giving the form a sense of three-dimensionality. However, the texture of the bird sense a bit plastique and stylized over the organic texture of an actual bird. The highlights tend to give it a bulgy feel as if the bird was covered in bowels. In addition, the top wing of the bird seems rather flacid like it is dangling. Also, I would love to see composition. That would really add "feeling" to this piece. 5/10

Thanks for your comment! Looking back on the piece I have to agree with a lot of your ideas for improving it. The texture actually looks a lot better in real life though, I sorta messed it up in photoshop trying to get it to look like the original and it ended up with that "plasticy" look you mention.
I guess I was trying to use the highlights to add dimension, "bulgy" isn't quite the look I was going for but at least its better than flat. I suppose that will just have to be one of those things I keep practicing.
Oh yeah, I'm not too sure what you mean by "composition" as far as art is concerned. Would you care to explain a little more?

composition is how the piece works as a whole. Negative space, positioning, background.

Ok! Thanks for the advice. You're right, composition is something I need to work on, but since I'm still apprenticing most of my tattoos are smaller stuff right now that don't really have backgrounds. I'm starting to work on a sleeve though that will have a forest scenery, so that should be really good practice...

Agreed, the shading is a strong point in this picture! I like the smooth wave of a curve in the wing and how you layered the feathers. I think the wings and face, if you're going for realism, could go into a little bit more detail, but I think this is fantastic.
Good luck on your portfolio!

Thank you! I am obsessed with wings... they are so much fun to draw and there are so many kinds, they end up being the thing I practice the most. Well, next to skulls anyways.
