Description
This hornbill, Tockus monteiri, is the most arid-adapted hornbill in the world. It occurs in northern Namibia and southern Angola in rocky, semidesert country. Because trees are rare it often nests in holes in cliff faces, and often has a much larger job of plastering up the entrance than other hornbills. The female lays her eggs and broods the chicks while her 'husband' feeds her through a small slit. Watercolour with a bit of Photoshop-ing.Related content

Amazing watercolour, as always. Fantastic job on the background, I can't even begin to imagine how you handled painting all those overlaying branches. Very interesting subject too, it's always cool to see how certain species can adapt to extreme environments. Wonderful!

Wow. I really admire your ability to convey a realistic sense of depth in the backgrounds of your watercolor paintings. So much to learn from you! I always get so hung up on tiny details in watercolor, but you always capture so much texture and volume with what looks like relatively few brushstrokes. Your work is always really inspiring.
