Description
This is one of ten pieces I did for the new Star Wars Essential Guide to Warfare. I had a blast working on it and I'm excited that I am able to contribute to the Star Wars universe.I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the book. Hope you guys enjoy them!
This is one of my favorite pieces from the Galactic Civil War era. This battle, which took place after the destruction of the first Death Star but before the events of Empire Strikes Back, was an elaborate ambush set by Vader and the Empire to destroy the Alliance leadership along with its fleet. Under overwhelming odds the Rebels would've fled to a designated location where they would regroup, but had they done that they would have found another Imperial fleet waiting for them. The fleet instead dispersed and made random jumps to avoid being completely annihilated. The Alliance almost lost the entire fleet from this battle but enough survived to carry on the fight and eventually make a comeback at the Battle of Endor.
This battle is recounted in the Star War comic "Rebellion: My Brother, My Enemy".

The rebels used anything they could get their hands on. Even with the Empire having retired and scrapped all their old Venator Class ships there were still plenty of Providences and Venators around.Β

Yes, but they've been repurposed as Alliance ships. The Alliance was probably desperate enough to use almost anything they could get their hands on.

Β That's what I thought for a long time too. It would make sense that at least one Venator class would defect. But the shape isn't quite right. I now think that it is an unknown Rendili or Mon Calamari design.

This cockpit layout makes more sense than what was seen in Episodes 4, 5, and 6, which were so simplistic as to be almost unrealistic.

Β A highly energetic scene, with all sorts of action going around the entire scene. This would be a fun scene to play out in a mission like X-Wing Alliance or Rouge Squadron. So many targets begging to be shot down. Unless you get singled out by 4 or more TIE fighters, and torn apart.
Β The Venator traveling out of the frame is the icing on the cake. I just knew that not all of the Republican captains would've taken Palpatine's shit! Hopefully, she survived this battle (probably not, since she would've been considered a high priority target, as well as a traitor). The only thing that would've made this better was Victory class as well, whose crew had also gotten tired of the totalitarian regime (that and the Venator firing back, and trying to tear apart that Imperial). I always thought that at least a few captains would've stayed loyal to the ideals of the Republic.
Β And I wonder if that is the first time they deployed a B-Wing?
