Well, this one was definitely a challenge, and I had a Blast working on it. When I lived in Scotland as a kid my dad used to carve celtic knotting into walking sticks; it was a lot of fun to try my hand at it. I had a tough time deciding whether to emboss the design or engrave, and I'm glad I eventually chose to emboss it; I think it looks better in relief than in would if I had engraved it.
The over-under crossing of the knotting took ages to work out, especially wrapping around the handle, but I had a lot of fun staying up late and staring at the design with an engraving tool and a Terry Pratchett audiobook. Certainly I'm going to try doing a complete wand handle in celtic knotting at some point in the future; it could be fun.
The design is a celtic tree of life, with the roots becoming branches and branches becoming roots. Always good with a design, those celts. The flattened out version of the handle looks like this
This wand also marks a sort of wand making spree for me-while I have the shop set up to do lathe work and engraving I figured I do all the wands I have on commission in one go, so you should see about four or five in the next week. A couple of them are finished now and just need to be stained.
