Description
Ren, where is my pet cat?
Basics
Name: あかり | Akari
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Height: 181 cm / 5’ 11”
Job: Undertaker
Animal: Akabeko
Magic: Anything he touches becomes sparkly clean. Think of him like hand sanitizer: gets rid of only 99.99% of the germs because no matter how clean he makes you, he can't get rid of your dirty thoughts smh
Personality
「Religious | Diligent | Disciplined」
Highly religious, Akari follows the teachings of Buddhism with ultimate respect and dedication. Yet, because Buddhism has no set rules, he finds many loopholes in the teachings that do not necessarily violate them.
「Cunning | Flexible | Oblivious」
While he never lies, that doesn’t mean he won’t twist the truth to his favor. Similarly, drinking is no crime if he doesn’t get drunk. The most extreme perhaps, is his refusal to take lives, including plants… Which means he requires others to cook for him, since eating already-dead veggies is not taking life, right?
Hidden behind his permanent smile is a crafty and sharp-tongued individual that often seems as if he can’t read the atmosphere. It is unknown if he’s simply ignoring it, or if he really is just bad at matching others’ tempos.
「Uncanny | Expressionless」
Akari is rarely seen without a smile and his eyes closed. If you're blessed enough to see his blank eyes open, he doesn't seem to need to blink. He often gives off an empty feeling, seemingly-devoid of emotions like happiness and anger that often define a person. Because of his experience in war, he is desensitized towards death, but he is still sympathetic towards the living.
Likes:
-Buddha
-Nothing(?): Material possessions are unnecessary. To be happy is to let go of wants.
Dislikes:
-Nothing(?): Buddha says to forgive and forget.
History
Born in a time of war, Akari watched first hand as the exchange in power happened and the Tokugawa shogunate rose in power. Originally from the Aizu region, he grew up with a reputation no better than an orphan in a small town. His father had been dragged into the war, and his mother was too sick to tend to the young child.
Alone, spiteful, and hostile, Akari reached adolescence through fighting over the smallest grains of rice with the abandoned children on the streets. When his mother passed away one day, he decided to join the same war that had taken his father’s existence. After all, there was no place he could call home anyways -- the streets hardly seemed like a valid shelter.
Solitary and unfeeling became traits that defined him as he rose from the lowly status of a new recruit to a respected fighter within the army. But the war soon dragged to an end after the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, and Akari -- holding no personal loyalty towards the lord he served -- was left with no purpose again.
Wandering the lands without a goal, he chanced upon a half-built temple dedicated towards teaching Buddhism. Although still new, the temple was welcoming toward the aimless traveler. Akari soon found himself attached to the kind monks who had not only sheltered him, but also taught him their teachings, including literacy and numeracy.
Only when the monastery was completed did Akari leave, this time not as a purposeless traveler, but as an enlightened individual. In just a few years, the cow was reformed to, though not perfect, a much more gracious person. Even though the harsher side of him still existed, he no longer felt the world was unbearable to live in, enjoying life for what it is instead.
When he came across the small town of Mizuyama, he decided to settle down peacefully, making a living as an undertaker.
