Located 100 km west of Morroco / Western Sahara border in the Atlantic Ocean it is a Spanish autonomous community.
Capital is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Area: 7.447 sq km
Pop: 2.099.000
The islands are a major tourist attraction. After end of Franco era, there was a pro-independence armed movement in Algeria - MP AIAC.
Now there are some pro-independence political parties, notably the National Congress of Canaries CNC led by Antonio Cubillo,
founder of MPAIAC, but the support for them is marginal.
