Kedah gave to the British East India Company in 1786 for protection from Siamese.
It didn't materialize and the area was attacked by Siam.
Nevertheless, the British stayed in Penang, made it part of the Straits Settlement and later, of the Malayan Union,
Federation of Malaya and Malaysia.
It is now widely recognized as the most socially progressive state of Malaysia.
Ethnically, it is Malay 43%, Chinese 41% and Indian 10%.
