Smallest (in population) of all federal subjects of RF, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug is located in Archangelsk Oblast of northern Russia.

Originally under the influence of the Novgorod, it fel under the controle of Muscovy in 1499.
The Nenets Autonomous District (Okrug) was created in 1929, but underwent several territorial changes.
Naryan Mar was elevated to town status in 1935.
There is an Association of the Nenets People "Yasavey" safeguarding Nenets linguistic and cultural rights.
Nenets constitute 18.7% of the okrug's population (Russians - 62.4%) and are an Uralic (Samoyedic) nation, related to Ugro-Finns.
