Description

Edit: Hehe, I think I've found a way to fix the marker bleeds.
Done with Copic markers.

I used at leas three colors for the lovely dark skin: YR24 -Pale Sepia (for the base), E37 -Sepia (for the actual skin color), and Y38 -Honey (for a top coating, because I messed up, but it served to fix the miscolored dark spots).

Still need white out for the eyes and teeth... because no one like yellow teeth. And for the shine on the skin too.

I'm in the stage of planning out my characters for this story I want to get done (I'm still learning how to draw guys, and hot ones at that. ). I'm not sure if I'm going write it or make it into a graphic novel, but dammit, I WILL get it done!!!

Numyamka (Noom-yahm-kuh) the orphan. She resides in a compound where a slightly perverted old man cares for other orphans.

Somewhat bashful, and reticent around others, she is nonetheless an interesting person to be around, and despite these traits, she is highly curious and will not let bashfulness get in the way most of the time. Her curiosity and sense of adventure is always forcing her to seek lost artifacts or explore new places.
A sense of disheartenment is always simmering underneath her optimism. This is due to the loss of her parents, whom she was very close to. She is also a bit defensive, and easliy hurt when she is critized. She is also vunerable to deep bouts of depression at times.
Her mother, upon her death, had told her that she would watch over her once she had joined the ancestors; this came to pass, as a Bioko bird (presumeably the mother's spirit) is often found at her mother's grave site, and eventually comes to join the lonely Numyamka at her home in the perverted old man's compound.

Amoung the Kabujo, who are for the most part egalitarian, tend to be matriarchal in societal practices and many customs. Orphans are looked down upon in society, because the mother is the family history and basically the only person who may consent for marriage and to whom the suitor's family pays the bride price to. It is also becuase they have no mother to pass on inheritence, the family line stops, and it is extremely hard or rare for a motherless young woman to marry (the husband marries into wife's family, and the mother of the wife is head of the clan; grandmothers are the backbone of clans).

These circumstances deter Numyamka from admitting her budding affection and attraction to a young man named Lekan (Lay-khan; meaning "my wealth is secured" in Yoruba ). She shows her affections through secret means- leaving small presents such as fruit or food that she cooked in front of his home, using her sculpting skills and making two small statues of Lekan's newly deceased younger siblings, and leaving coral and other types of jewlery in front of his hut on his birthday.

She has a fish named Zobo, whom she talks to very often. Strangely, the fish seems to respond with certain actions, depending on the mood Numyamka is in. He is named after a drink that is a Nigerian version of fruit punch.xD

This will be colored soon, just wanted to get it up because it was really killing me.

I'm not overly familiar with African art, but I've seen some examples from Zimbabwe that are very similar in their use of colour. Lots of reds, oranges and yellows. I wasn't overly fond of them, as they seemed a little garish. This is softer and less stressful on the eyes. Maybe because of the darker colours, the blues and greens stop it from being unrelenting in its brightness.

Oh trust, I can make it a lot brighter than this. Brighter colors can be a bit harsh on the eyes, but I think, personally, that it can be toned down with bold patterns, as is usually the case with African clothing.

The African people I know and have known have embraced the british way of life and culture quite heavily so my experience of African culture is limited. Though, there is no surpressing their love of bright colours. It's a refreshing break from the quite sombre art of traditional europe.

Hahah, looks like you'll have to take a trip (or another trip- I think you've mentioned you've been there before?) to Africa! West Africa is where I get all my references for patterns and such from. I agree though; I guess it's just in me to love bright colors.

I've not traveled to Africa before, but there are a few places I'd like to see at some point. Victoria Falls would be a great place to write, also there is a large salt flat in Zimbabwe (I think) and the sunsets through the dust are said to be the most beautiful in the world.

Yeah, Africa seems like a nice place. I want to live there one day.

It's too hot to make it my home, I'm used to the colder north of the world. Northern Japan appeals to me, Sopporo or somewhere around there.

I figured that. I think I'm pretty adaptable; I sleep with a blanket over me even when it's 94 degrees (I think that's about 40 Celsius for you?) Japan sounds nice too! I could not survive in the norht though.

Us northern peoples deal with the cold much better than we do the heat. Northern Japan misses the worst of the monsoon season, but it gets heavy snowfall in the winter. There are places in Africa I'd like to visit, but it is definitely too hot to live there all the time.

Well, if you're going to color this, it's not so important which media you use as basic concepts. You need to know the structure of the face - where the cheek bone, jaw, chin, and nose jut out, and what is set deep into the skull, like eyes. Remember, the head isn't a pancake! You need to think which part of it is closest to you and what goes further away, and relate that to your colors and markmaking.

Having said that, in pastel, I would start with some basic browns, with pthalo blue and violet to add to shadows and darker areas, and pinks to add vibrancey all around. I'd use some ochre for highlights, and a bit of scarlet. And I'd add black sparingly for highlights, but always mix it with other colors or it'll look flat. For light highlights, some light orange/cream colors and then white.

Also, the face has warm and cool areas. I find ears/inner ears are always orangish, as are nostrils, and the creases beside the nose (where your cheeks meet your nose). In some lighting they're orange, on others their violet. The bridge of the nose is usually a tad more violet, and noses are shinier than other parts of the face. Cheeks are cooler, and so is the forehead. Eyelids can be a bit greener.

Take all this in consideration and then do a ton of observation study on your own.

I was wondering how to prevent it from looking flat, so thanks a lot for explaining and going into detail about HOW to avoid making it look flat.
I'm new with pastels, but I already enjoy them.

Thanks so much for the help!

Overall nice. The eyes seem odd. Where is she looking? To the left of the viewer? Or at the viewer?

Thanks a lot!

And I just now realized that her left eye isn't matching up with the right one, so I'll have to fix that somehow. Too bad I don't have MS paint or something.
