Description The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is an extremelly successful apex predator. It is regarded as one of the largest reptiles in the world, competing in size with the contemporaneous and highly endangered Megalania, reaching lengths of a 7 meter long maximum, only surpassed by the 8 meter long Toyotamaphimeia, a gavialid from Japan. Saltwater crocodiles are notorious for being highly adaptable, living both in freshwater and in saltwater environments. As the largest crocodile in the world, this is particularly preoccupying, as this monster can not only be found in continental Southeast Asia and Australia, but also on many islands of the Indian and the Pacific, such as the Phillipines and various islands from Indonesia. As long as there is water with prey, these salties live and hunt.

This individual in the image above is called by the local tribes by many names, being the most scary one the name Solaray, meaning, in an ancient archaic Aboriginal lost dialect, the Happiness Smeller, saying it smells the prey and hunts them when they are not expecting. Despite this scary reputation, its first reported man attack was made to the young chief Tratanyuk, which came out alive from the attack, at the cost of loosing its genitals. At that time, Solaray was 4,3 meters long, a young adult. Now, 15 years later, he is almost 5,8 meters long, weighing close to a ton, given some more years. This apex predator is depicted here, killing a young and unfortunate Genyornis, and it is reported to have killed close to 10 humans through his lifespan.
