Description Photo postcard, circa 1920s

A grand old gal! When launched in 1905, she and Caronia were the largest in the Cunard fleet. On one of her many trips from Liverpool to New York between '05-'10, she brought the famed writer H.G. Wells to America for his first time.

In 1913, she was a first responder to the Volturno fire and sinking disaster, and helped in saving numerous lives. Her crew and captain were awarded medals for gallantry.

During the first world war she was fitted with guns and worked as an armed merchant cruiser, successfully sinking a similarly outfitted German vessel near Brazil in 1914.
She served out the remainder of the war in Europe, and after the war brought returning Canadian troops home from the continent.

After WWI Carmania was once again a passenger liner and this old postcard is a testament to her longevity and service.

The study and collection of postcards is called #deltiology . It's the third largest collecting hobby in the world, combining passions for history, art and the written word all into one. Discover the world, one image at a time!

Cool! I believe the only written on ship card I own is from an American coastal liner, it says something jokingly sarcastic, along the lines of "life in first class is swell" or somesuch

lol passenger must have enjoyed the trip. I have a few from passengers. I'll have to check and count how many in my collection are used.
