Description In the fall of 2013 the Pacific plate lurched upward in a tectonic event the likes of which the world has not seen in centuries. The tidal wave that rushed inland leveled most of Western Washington and Oregon, destroying their great cities and much of the states' natural beauty. The initial earthquake resulted in a series of aftershocks felt across the Pacific Rim, the most destructive of which only added to the disaster in the North-West and extended into Southern California, turning Los Angles and San Francisco to ruin. The earthquake also sent the Cascade Volcanoes into chaos, resulting in the eruption of both Mt. Rainier and Mt. Saint Helens. The Ash cloud spread over most of Idaho and was seen from as far away as St. Paul

When the dust had settled, and mountains quieted, over 6 million people had lost their lives, with countless more wounded. The West Coast was all but abandoned by the survivors, and President Obama was forced to declare the depopulated states as a single Territory.

Those that stayed behind rallied to rebuild their broken homes, a coordinated effort was eventually formed by the locals to salvage what was left and rebuild. The Territory of Pacifica became in essence a Socialist commune. All private property was possessed by the Territorial government, and through cooperation with the Federal Government the ports of Tacoma, Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland, and San Francisco were re-opened, returning Pacific trade to America. Over the next decade, a combination of local and federal works projects rebuilt the West, and began to restore its cities, its ecosystem, and eventually its people.

From the Pacifica territory, new states were established, and old ones redrawn. The territory's first governor would go on to become President, and while so much had been lost, the new states have taken in new blood from the East, along with those who survived, seeking to return home.

How about renaming Pacifica as "Yerba Buena"?
By the way, are Californios (Spanish-speaking people already living in the territory) the majority in this alternate California? How about an alternate version of Hollywood?

Thanks!

This was an ATL when I wrote it, but rather a future history scenario. Mexican Americans are still the majority in California, yes. We don't call them Californios, at least not since the 19th Century.

Yup. Where's the film production center of the USA in this scenario?

I always wonered why the USA california wasn't still called "Alta California" (as opposed to Baja California.) But still, very well researched!

It was the only one in the US so it did not need a qualifier.  A bit surprising really that the Baja has stuck around on Mexican California all this time.

yes and well thanks, I think. And you have a point and indeed it is. a state larger than many countries and compressed areas with not much in the middle.

Reno is like friggin' invinciable. Even if Tahoe dumped over, we still got Sparks and most of Spanish Springs still alive. It would eventuly drain into Pyramid lake, and the Trukie river would be no more, but the city would rebuild.

GO NEVADA!!
