I prefer the horizontal composition. Seems to capture the spirit of this particular fall better, since it's more a flat, wide curtain of water. I also think the bits of color (green moss and yellow leaves) liven up the scene.

Did you use some kind of fill lighting? The foreground is beautifully lit, with the background fading into the shadows. A very powerful mechanism to show depth.

I didn't use any additional lighting in that scene. The foreground was lit by the natural light. The dark background is a pure luck. Anyway, I am glad you like it
