Description And if love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

- Rush, Bravado -

Another one for the 100 Themes Challenge : #50, Breaking The Rules.

Here's a story that wasn't meant to be. The story of a young woman betrothed to an old, rich Lord, and who awoke one day to the kaaru, the both blessed and cursed psychic power. The story of a young man bound by an Oath forbidding him to ever touch another human being, lest have a relationship with them. The story of two souls whose actions would shake a whole world, and mark the beginning of a new era.

She was shy and meek, used to obey her father's desires; he was strong and determined, to the point of dealing with the devil himself if needed. They met at the Arran School, where young telepaths were to be instructed in the ways of the kaaru. They met, grew a friendship, and found they had a common interest in staying together. She estranged herself from her own family, who would've married her to a man her father's age, to build her own path, both for herself and in support to the one whose cause she believed in; he went against customs so deeply engrained within the bodies and mind that nobody would ever hope to root them out, taking her as his wife and showing the world that it wouldn't endanger his work nor his self-control.

Here are Renata Rialann and Ian Thorne, on the day of what could be considered their betrothing, as Ian offers her to exchange tokens of their union (these can be rings, bracelets or earrings, but the bracelets looked better here). It's really much more of a business proposal, although they do end up falling in love as well later.

(The rule Renata broke was the one of the bigoted noble families, always on the lookout for alliances approved by the Church. The rule Ian broke was that of the Guide-Masters, meant to swear a lifelong oath of isolation and chastity in order to prevent anyone from threatening their families and thus blackmailing them. This scene technically doesn't happen in my Eien stories, because it's set some 20 years before the timeline, but if one day I get to write a prequel, it'll definitely be in. Anyway, I wanted to draw these two when they were still young, and the theme fits them pretty well.)

Against all odds, they managed to stay alive, proving along the way that such unions would also prevent their powers from drying up in future generations; later on, more people followed on the road they opened on that fateful day.

Media: Manga Studio Debut 3.0. I wanted to play with screentones for this one. Thanks to MPsai for mentioning this software, it's proven a real pleasure to use.

There's something about the black-and-white I really like - maybe it's the nostalgic feel and old photo can bring.

Ah, maybe. It's one of the few old drawings I still like today (I'm not used to that). Perhaps that nostalgia thing, indeed.

The picture is lovely, and the characters real and 3-dimensional. (Sorry, I would write a longer comment but I need to dash!)

OMG RUSH!!! Bonus!

I think you did a good job with the screentones. He looks all "mwa ha ha ha ha ha!" a bit. ^_^;

He is quite 'mwahaha" in this scene, for sure. The basis behind it is that he's going to exploit a tiny loophole in the texts of the local version of the Bible, and those who'd like to prevent him from doing so will realize it only when it's too late. What can I say, I like scheming chars...

I do too! They're so very intriguing and you get drawn to them. Good story there!

this is so nice and a romantic one..though it is not colored..u can still see the dark and light shades on the piece and also i love the bg with those somewhat glowig spirits or smoke with the glows

At some point I wondered if I should use colors on this one, I admit. But for years, I had wanted to draw with screentones, so when I got the opportunity, I just couldn't resist.

Lovely tones, the poses are so beautiful; I love the look of wonderment on her and the look of mischeviousness on him. Those are also beautiful fingers, and a nice use of tones. I would like to get my hands on a copy of that software too

Thanks, I'm glad that I've managed to convey these expressions of theirs. I've loved using this software, really; it's very much manga-oriented, but since this was the kind of effects I wanted to pull, it's perfect. If I'm not mistaken, the Debut one has a trial version available on e-frontier.com; that can always be useful.

Very beautiful drawing! The b/w coloring and the snow(?) in the background really gives the picture a special atmosphere!

Yzabel In reply to Chimere [2006-09-11 18:50:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that is so pretty!! And the wispy ribbony clouds (are they? ) in the background...very lovely!! I'd say those tones turned out beautifully, as did the expressions (which I seem to love praising ALL the time! XD ) That story is cool and sounds unique, too!! Gee, the 100 themes thing I saw you mention it, but I didn't follow up and look! Maybe I'll take a peek!!

They may be clouds if we want them to be clouds, but it's more a general atmosphere anyway - I was toying with the screentones integrated within the software, and this one looked like it could fit the picture quite well.

man he looks so mischevious here! I'm really diggin the design for her though.. love the multiple braids ...

Yzabel In reply to HiddenRelevance [2006-09-09 22:09:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes, he is. Believe me, he is. This man has very noble and righteous goals, but he also has his own ways of reaching them, and these don't always involve playing according to the rules. There's so much more behind this scene, though - I'd never have enough room in the description box to explain all what his act implied at the moment he proposed her.

I'm quite happy about how the braids came out. Until the very end of drawing the sketch, I didn't know what kind of hairdo she'd sport. Now I know.
