Looks very cool! I've had this kind of image in my mind for awhile, but as a dual-stick, Renegade Ops-style shooter. Or to those really old guys like me, something like MechWarrior 3050 on SNES.

BTW how far are you on the backend-code? Will this be played on a hexagone map ala BattleTech tabletops? Will et be fully 3D animated or oldschool 2D in an isometric view?

Not familiar with Airmech, and I haven't played MW Tactics. I did play the tabletop back in the day, as well as most of the older PC Mechwarrior titles and MWO.

I've got a solid base of the tactical combat working, including movement, weapon firing, environment destruction, pathing, and basic enemy AI. The most recent video is on the tumblr link in the description if you are curious to see it in action. It uses a square grid but mechs take up a 2x2 space, and is fully 3D animated.

I've actually played a crapton of MWO and enjoy it despite the plethora of technical issues it still has, but it's definitely a bummer that they made two multiplayer-only BT games in a row. My project is a single-player campaign first and foremost though (don't know if I'll ever even get around to a multiplayer component) so hopefully it'll scratch that itch.

Yep, it's a 2D painting made with Photoshop. That said, it was painted over top of a simple 3D rendering blockout (via 3DS MAX) to save time and effort setting up correct lighting and perspective for the larger shapes.

This is very cool. I'm not huge on strategy games (last one I played regularly was DoW eight or so years ago) but I'd definitely give a game of this concept a try.

Well hey that's a good sign! Hopefully I can put together something that is easy to understand but challenging to master. I think the intimidation factor and tedium of having to click so much to do anything in the old-school user interfaces put up a kind of barrier for strategy games. You had to already be very interested in playing to stick with the games long enough to get to the good stuff.

End War was a really neat concept. If you don't know it, they used voice commands to interact with troops in a battlefield scenario. Honestly, I just enjoyed feeling like I was some important commanding figure.

I have a few mech ideas in my head for my own game, but they're somewhat silly on concept (one's a more literal take on a spider tank (with the odd part that sticks off being a piece of siege artillery and the other is based off a 1950s bulldozer). This seems more serious.

Thanks! I've seen some crazy mech designs out there, and they can be pretty awesome. I tend to be pretty conservative in my designs, but once I get through an initial basic set of mechs I'm going to go for some more unusual and eccentric stuff which should be fun.

If I may make a suggestion: a bear-like quadruped mech with two flak cannons. Call it the Ursa Mauler with a Snow, Night Ops and Brown colorset.


Because that seems somewhat silly without being too silly.

Glad you like it. It was an on the spot idea, but it's the kind of thing that makes for entertainment. Especially if you add a scene with some characters wondering why anyone built it.

There seems to be no debris from the exploded smoking thingy next to the red mech, and it looks kinda like a stand off, since no one is in the middle of firing or getting hit.
