Description
Hertha class is heavy modification of Bauer class light cruiser. It is Strike (missile) cruiser designated for missile and torpedo strikes on close to medium ranges, planet bombardments and even long range (sniping) attacks. Hertha been heavy modification of Bauer have same defenses although its armor is slightly lighter. It has impressive armament which consists of four single turreted 190mm Phased laser beam cannons, 90 VLS cells for anti-ship missiles, 48 missile broadside missile launchers for anti-fighter/missile/torpedo missiles, 4 bow mounted anti-ship torpedoes, eight large torpedo launchers for ship killer torpedoes Onix. It also have 42 single 40mm Pulse Laser AA rapid firing cannons. Ship like all German ships have ECM systems. Hertha is 525m long and have 480 crew. Small crew for its size but due heavy automation larger crew was not needed. ship do not carry fighters but it have space for fourteen shuttles.
Due decent defenses this ships are usually escorted by either frigates or destroyers and are used in hit and run tactics. Originally at least a hundred ships was planned by Command but this was cut to only twenty two ships, reason that dedicated missile ships or strike ships were not really needed when all ships in service carry heavy missile-torpedo arsenal, however frigate sized missile boats were retained in larger numbers due been cheap, having small crews and easy to re-arm. Despite small numbers Hertha was still prominent during the war with Chinese, however it suffer losses, five ships were lost during the war with three additional removed from service due heavy damage, rest of the ships remain in active service. Some officers believed that decision to make smaller frigate sized missile boats was wrong due smaller amount of ammo that those ships could carry however during war with Chinese Empire, Imperial missile ships had very little or no success in directly endangering larger Germanian ships and loss of five ships in single battle and three additional in next saw many flaws with strike cruisers, despite its armaments they were unable to defend themself against direct attack by enemy.
