Come to think of it, we know human SOULs are very powerful while monster SOULs are kinda fragile.
But what about animal SOULs? Like, those that live on the surface? Non-magical, non-human creatures, I mean.
What would their SOULs look like, I wonder?
Would they look like human SOULs, facing upward and be colorful, or like monster SOULs, facing downward and being white? A mix of the two, downward and colorful, or upward and white?
Since humans technically are animals and non-magical, I would guess non-magical animals would have SOULs similar to humans, but maybe not as powerful as human SOULs...Or maybe just as powerful or even more powerful than human SOULs, depending on the species of animal, depending on the number of kills each individual has...
This is interesting...

perhaps they would be something comepletely different. smaller, at least, i would imagine. animals don't seem to be as sentient as humans and monsters.

I often have a hard time with the word "sentient" when using it to describe animals as "less sentient than humans".
After all, we don't really know what animals are thinking or feeling, so we can't exactly say they are less sentient, simply because we don't completely understand them. We keep discovering new things about animal sentience than before, and we discover that animals previously being stamped as "stupid" or "driven by insticts" are actually rather intelligent, this including pigs, chickens and pigeons, the last two often perceived as dumb but actually rather intelligent and fast learners.
Because of our own ignorance of what animals are capable of, I do not like when people describe animals as "less sentient" or even "non-sentient", as this is really incorrect. And even if going by feelings or emotions, we have seen footage of domestic and even wild animals forming unusual friendships with other species as well as predators sometimes - whether rarely or just uncommon - showing mercy to prey, like a bear pulling a crow out of the water in its habitat without killing it. The crow then got up and flew away.
Because of this, I think it is wrong to treat any animal with such cruelty, at least when I stop to think about sentience. But, since I am just an ignorant human like everyone else, I often forget it myself when I spot a spider on the wall or the floor and go to swat it. But at least I make sure to give the bugs a quick death. Unless the spider is in the shower...
ANYWAYS what I'm saying is, we humans are ignorant and cruel, even if we don't mean to be and regret out actions immediately after doing so.
But I still do not like the use of calling animals "less sentient" than humans.

Sorry for the long and rather deep comment, I guess, not to provoke you or accuse you of anything, I'm just kind of ranting over humanity in general...

of course! i don't take any offense, and i see your point! one of my dogs is very perceptive and acts repeatedly like a human, kinder, even. she is veey sensitive to emotion and even if i do not show my sadness with expression, she senses something is up and will try to get my attention so that i feel better! once, i couldn't sleep the whole night and when my other dog fell asleep immediately, she stayed up with me and kept her head under my chin the whole time. she definitely seems like the type to have a SOUL.

i think you are right in some ways, but humans are outstanding for thier obvious language skills and relationships, whereas most animals mate to reproduce and then leave each other. here are instances on both sides of the spectrum.

animals such as gray wolves and emperor penguins mate for life, which is adorable and human-like. these are the kinds of animals which feel like they have SOULs. they always stick together.

but! the hellbender (which is a type of salamander native to u.s. and other parts of the world) is a pretty big animal that LITERALLY (i did my research, i once had to write a paper about hellbenders) mate and then the males KICK the females OUT OF THE NEST!!! other than that one time of year to mate, they hate each other and live in solitude. THESE kinds of animals don't feel like they have SOULs. like they don't have the capacity to love.

i feel like the capacity to love is a dividing factor? and i am not implying that to have a SOUL one HAS to love, i am just talking about whether or not they CAN love. whether or not they are ABLE to. some animals seem like they love, it is obvious in the way they treat each other and the things they do, but, like i said, most animals seem to only reproduce and then get out of each other's way. as if they don't really care anout the animal they just had children with.

anyway, now i'm rambling too. someone will look at our comments and die from the length, but that's okay. if you respond to this with new input i'd be happy to ramble on again! you seem like a smart person. •°-

Aw thanks, you seem like a smart person too:3

I've been thinking that the power of one's SOUL or soul in general may be affected by both love as well as awareness, like knowing the concept of mercy.
As for linguistic skills, it actually depends on the tongue whether an animal would be able to use advanced language like humans do.

Humans have a special tongue that allows us to form these sounds that we mix into words. We are actually using "sound mimicry", something that's usually only seen with birds, like parrots, crow birds, starlings and thrush among others.

Parrots are famous for being able to mimic human words, and some are even able to go beyond simply mimicking the sounds, being able to even converse with people by knowing the meaning of certain words. An example is Einstein, who knows the words of colors and when asked which color, it says the name of the color. I think it can also do math, as well as say the names of the numbers.

It's interesting how the tongues of humans are so similar to the tongues of birds, despite being a primate! I'm not sure if other great apes have this same kind of tongue, but apes are able to learn and use sign language, an example being Coco the gorilla. I'm not sure if it was her or another gorilla knowing sign language, but I remember reading an article/watching a documentary where the female gorilla had given birth to a baby, and the caretakers had then taken the baby away to examine it. When time came to feeding/conversing with the gorilla, she kept asking in sign language "Where is baby?", even when the caretaker tried asking other questions like "are you hungry" or "do you want to play" or something. She just kept asking where her baby was!

As for the love thing, with most animals, depending on the species they may stick together forever, they may switch partners if in a group (like lions) or they'll mate once and then leave each other again. With humans, however, it's different.
While most humans tend to stick together forever as mates, some do like cats and bears, mate once, then leave forever, and for some they do like lions and mate with multiple partners but may still do it with the same ones.

Humans are very strange animals, we keep trying to fight nature, if not only our own nature, even going as far as to make rules about what's natural for us and what's not, like staying with the same partner forever (which apparently is not COMPLETELY natural, given how often either partner tends to "cheat" on each other, which also tends to happen in nature with animals that naturally stick together, like penguins).

I'll end this reply before it gets too long, hope to get more input from you too^^

yeah, the language thing was a bit of a dead end, i found. i turned around pretty much as soon as i said that, so just pretend i didn't mention it. the way animals can communicate and even learn(birds) and understand(plenty of animals) human language kind of rules out the language thing. yes, plenty of people split up, things don't work out and love is broken, but again, i was really just trying to go for the CAPACITY to love and to stay together in a relationship, and to mourn loved ones, things like that. like i said in my last reply, i don't mean that someone or some animal species has to love one creature thier entire life in order to have a soul. also, i feel like the animal's offspring fit into a different category maybe(?) (and i mean in animals who mate and then act like they never met) because the mother in many species WILL lovingly and happily take care of the baby(ies), even protecting them at the cost of the mother's own life. whereas the father will desert and sometimes even threaten the safety of his own children. it's a weird thing.

*i looked it up, sometimes males of a certain group of animals will be driven to kill or even canniballize not fully-grown members of thier group and even thier own children. these animals can be lions, or baboons, or even the usually peaceful-seeming dolphins. Here is a copy-and-pasted article from the Smithsonian.

"After comparing different factors related to social structure and mating behavior, a pattern emerged. Males committed infanticide more frequently in species where males and
females lived together and a few males dominated as mates—but only remained at the top of the pack for brief periods of time. The practice was also associated with non-annual or seasonal reproduction cycles, meaning females could mate whenever. Through infanticide, males can eliminate the offspring of their competition and get the female back to full baby-making capacity faster, the team reports in a study published today in Science." quote unquote.

animals are weird, and they do weird things! just like people! hey, look, abortion(*not abortion, infanticide, i know! i'm just making a point*) or whatever in the animal kingdom! i guess the dolphins are gettin in on killing babies now, great.

urgh, anyway, i'm going to eat dinner now. nice talking to you! thanks for sharing your time~ and rambling with me. this feels like free philosophy class or something! it's great!

Nice talking to you too! Sorry for the late reply, been busy with stuff, been sick as well this week.

It's interesting how most cat species have the males kill any cubs/kittens that they either know they haven't fathered or are unsure of if they have fathered them. But even more interesting is that one particular species of cat make the exception of this rule.
Cheetahs. So far, there has been no documentation of male cheetahs killing cheetah cubs, whether related or unrelated. I saw a documentary where a cheetah mom and her cubs met with a brotherhood of cheetahs (dunno if groups of male cheetahs are called brotherhoods, but they are normally referred to as brothers even if unrelated, so I like the term brotherhood). There was no visible sign of aggression, the mother seemed a bit annoyed and hissed, but the males seemed calm and simply chirped at the mother and cubs, who also seemed fascinated by the male cheetahs.
The males obviously wanted to mate with the female, but she naturally turned them down. They didn't try to harm the cubs though, they kept chirping and dancing around the female (not literally dancing, but they were interested), until they eventually gave up and left.
Cheetahs appear to be the only cat species (as far as I know anyway) where the males do not practice infanticide. One of the reasons why I love cheetahs.
In most cat species though, females always seem to be the compassionate and tolerant ones, rarely if not never committing infanticide, and where a pride consisting entirely of lionesses and their cubs are more accepting of each other and cubs, maybe even newcomers that join (I actually don't know this, just an assumption, I may be wrong).
All the while the males almost always appear as cold-hearted jerks, all they care about is getting laid! Only the male lions will actually take care of the cubs as well, though they aren't reliable babysitters, as they may fall asleep while the females go hunting, and the cubs may wander off on their own! (have seen this in a documentary called "Serengeti")
No matter what the species, males will be males. *sigh*

Maybe he did attack the carrier, but restrained the attack so the specimen was left with 1 HP like he does in the game.
Then Gaster was disappointed it didn't die, maybe killed it himself or simply let it be.
Btw what was even in that carrier? Can't imagine Gaster wanting to have another monster killed for the purpose of experimentation, and it seems like there aren't any normal "animals" in the Underground. After all, only Monsters were banished to the Underground.
Then again, animals can live anywhere, appear anywhere and live. Perhaps it's an animal that lives by digging...
Like... a mole?
Who knows...

*sorry i know this is old* you pose a good question. if gaster sincerely thinks that he is doing something good by these experiments, then he can't be letting another monster be killed.
