And the ultimate irony, she not only ended up falling in love with a Coordinator, but the Ultimate Coordinator. Incredible piece.

It's amazing to see the amount of hate for Flay Allster. I can understand why and/or how Flay is such a person she is... For one thing, she's a spoiled rich kid with Elektra Complex. She is pampered to the bone and not used to seeing the horrors of war. Thus, it became her nature to act the way she acted.
Furthermore, she just saw her father get killed right before her eyes, which is good diagnosis for her losing part of her sanity and an even better reason for holding a grudge against Coordinators, ironically manipulating Kira Yamato, who is also a Coordinator, to do her bidding. Compared to Quess Paraya (from MSG: Char's Counter Attack), Flay Allster is much more tolerable.

Flay did get a lot of motivation for her actions, and character development thereof. Her kidnapping and POW-pet arc gave Flay a more balanced look on things, and I am sure that if she had not gotten blown up then she would have been able to pick up with Kira on a better note. She turned out to be first-rate tragic heroine though, unlike Quess, who mainly came across as a spoiled brat with no understanding of the world around her or a real stake in the action.

We'd like to think so, yeah, but Quess was intended to be a Newtype silver spoon head case just ripe for manipulation & exploitation. There is a not-so-veiled critique of her old man and the Federation leadership (and by extension, Japan inc. circa 1990). It's not a flattering character bio, but it works, and it ought to engender a little understanding, maybe a little sympathy.
