Description Whee! Finally installed the Kodak program so we can upload pics onto the comp

So. This is the first of my 3D Media submissions
Just so ya know, I love all sorts of 3D stuff, whether it by plushies, sculpting, beadwork, etc. So I dabble in a lot of different stuff. I may not be particularly good at this sorta thing (cartooning is my strong point), but I love doing it anyways
Not surprisingly, my favorite part of DA to browse is Artisan Crafts, simply because it's so full of neat stuff (if you're ever bored, browse there. Sometimes you find really neat things . Then again, sometimes it's pretty dull...)

BUT. About the piece. This is technically not Origami, because I did a whole lotta cutting and not a lotta folding. I'd rather stick it here than miscallaneous though.

My attempt at this (I don't know what you's call it. Paper sculpting? ._.) was inspired by someone I saw in Visual Basics class. I glimpsed this dragon they'd made out of paper that was about a handspan long, from tail tip to nose tip. Ezcept it was a lot simpler and showed less knowledge of dragon anatomy . I thought it was really nifty, so when I got home, I decided to attempt making something similar.
It ended up looking pretty much nothing like hers, but I still like this a lot n-n. And I didn't know how she got the paper pieces to stick together, so I used tape (glue would have been messy, slow, and I'd have to hold each pieces for at least a minute to get it to stay.) So you can see the tape in some places, but oh well.

On the upper left hand corner (if you're facing the screen), I lifted up the wings (yes that's my thumb x3) so you can see the body. Sorry the pic is a bit dark, but you can get a comparitive idea of the size of the dragon (My thumb is skinnier and longer than is normal, but it shouldn't mess up your estimate too much ;3). You can also see my sketches for the wings on the underside in that same pic. I was afraid the paper would rip/wrinkle if I tried to erase it off, and you rarely see the pencil marks anyways (just when you lift the wings).

And the wings do stay in that shape. I held them curled for a minute or so, and they stay nicely curved like that =3. Only drawback is every once in awhile you need to re-curl the wings to keep them from getting too flat. But I've only needed to do it once, and this piece is a few weeks old.

One thing I don't like about this piece is the tail. I didn't know how I should've ended the tail, so I made a random 3-pronged spike thing. It looks fine from all angles except from a profile view. From that angle it looks too small. But It's not enough to go back and fix . I was also a little miffed that the tail flopped to one side, but it actual looks pretty natural that way .

But overall I am super-pleased with this n_______n

Pic was taken on my un-made bed (that's a navy blue rumpled sheet) in front of my dirty (dog nose prints. ewe" ) window with a "Fear No Fish" G-Loomis window sticker. Taken around twilight, that's why the shadows are so strong.

Materials: 2 sheets of computer paper, scissors, Scotch tape.

haha, I'm glad you think so! This isn't really what comes to mind when most people think "art," it's usually considered more of a craft.

I'm making something similar, only mine's out of wood... much more difficult. I have no clue right now HOW I'm going to make the wings, but other than that... yeah. Yours is very nifty XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to madgenius09 [2008-02-18 02:58:59 +0000 UTC]

Holy crap, yes, wood would be about a million times more difficult D8
But much more durable, I'd think xD;

For the wings though... I dunno 8|
You could make the bones out of wood, then use fabric or something as the membrane?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

madgenius09 In reply to akireru [2008-02-18 03:13:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I meant i was making the skeleton out of wood, and then going to cover it with something like cloth or paper mache, but to do that, I have to make it first XD

the problem with the wings is that I'm not yet sure how I can make them sweep back correctly...oh, well, that'll be the last thing I do XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to madgenius09 [2008-02-18 03:48:21 +0000 UTC]

and it still sounds harder than making it out of paper! xD

Yeah, I think wings are really hard to do, especially bat-like wings, because they're half stiff (bones) and half stretchy (membrane).

madgenius09 In reply to akireru [2008-02-18 04:03:32 +0000 UTC]

I was looking at your design again, and I think I may have the solution to the wings. Actually, I have two; the first would be a quasi-design that makes each part of the wing one whole, curved piece. The other would be to actually make straight pieces, similar to the bone structure, and then gluing them in the correct pose. The drawback to either idea, though, is that the wings would be flat (straight out as opposed to the more natural slightly furled)

....../.......||.........../\
..../.........||........./....\
../...........||......./
/.............||...../
straight...||.....furled

hopefully this kinda illustrates my point...I am horrible at symbol-based graphics...

And yes, it is quite difficult. I have gotten burns AND blisters from this project! T-T

I understand what you mean x3
But really I don't know which would be better. I just have no experience when it comes to wood u_u

I love those things xD
I just hope one day I get brave enough to do them. I really want to learn how to sew >_<

You inspired me yesterday. XD Since I had no sewing or glueing material whatsoever, I went to the mini-market(and that's pretty rare by itself) and bought lots of ingredients. I shall go cooking tomorrow! (The end of the word must be near XD)

Glad you like it, but... what exactly would I make a tutorial on? ._.
I just put clothes on a werewolf and made it sipping tea ._.
I can't do a tutorial on imagination ;

Wait. I just realized something. You commented on my paper dragon, not my most recent deviation Whoops 8D;

This I probably could make a tutorial for, but it would be a very long and confusing one e__e

Alright. Don't hold yer breath though. I don't plan on making another e__e. It was too irritating, finnicky and time consuming the first time.
