Description I loved this photograph. I'd been looking for a definative Ginger Rogers photograph for some time.
It's a 1936 publicity photograph, taken by Ernest Bachrach. The costume is from "Shall We Dance", but I'm not sure what relation the photograph is to the film. I don't think it's a costume shot, because the hairstyle and dress, while both in the film, are not shown together. I should have realised that drawing all of those sparkly stones would almost kill me, but I didn't - at least, not until it was too late. I think they look alright now, at all events.
I apologise for the watermarking. I try not to make it too overpowering, but I also want to protect my work.

This probably took about 20 hours, but I lost track.
It's 25cm wide, and 30cm long, on A3 sketching paper, 110gsm.
I used a 0.5 mechanical pencil, with B lead, a solid graphite 8B pencil, tissues, blending stumps and cotton buds.
Levels were tweaked in Photoshop, but it looks pretty close to the original

Comments and favs are always very welcome

enjoy, and have a lovely day

Thank you!
Just a heads-up back: Many artists will get quite grumpy at you if you just inform them that you're going to be chopping up their work and using it elsewhere as if it was stock (post-modern pop-art notwithstanding). I'm not too bothered in this case, as it is a portrait from an existing photograph that I did not do for any commercial job and you're going to credit, but I certainly wouldn't be letting anyone do that with my illustration or commercial work, and not all artists have the same rules - it's a very grey area. You'll probably save yourself a few grumpy replies/possible take-down notices if you stick to using stock images (following the stock rules, of course).Β
Sorry for the lecture! I hope you'll take it in the spirit in which it is given Β

Oh, thank you! A lot of portraiture is just determined and dedicated practice - a lot of it.

Lovely, lovely work here! I was looking through your amazing gallery and was thrilled to death to see Ginger Rogers! She's my favorite actress
Anyway, getting back to the drawing... the details are incredible, from the thumbnail view, you'd think it was a photo! The shadows are absolutely perfect as are all the features. Incredible drawing

If I'm going to do a portrait, classic stars are my favourite subjects, because there are such striking photos of them. I don't do so many portraits now, though; they're more a practice activity.

So do I! And I have some wonderful pictures to work from- nice ones of Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, which I haven't yet attemped- in fact, so many that I want to draw. The list just keeps growing So there will always be me drawing them! I find them much more enjoyable, although often harder to capture, than contemporary people.
I'm ever so glad you like my work, thanks so much!

that is freakishly detailed.
how you manage to draw everything without trailing off to blankness is beyond me
hAHHAHAh
its excellent
i love how you made the light on her hair and face look so luminous.
the hair is amazing
and you must have a nice scanner.
looks wonderful.

I can probably manage it because I spend most of my time doing uni homework, so the pictures take weeks, and I only too a bit at a time
I loved that lighting, but it was very hard to replicate.
And yes, I love my scanner. It could have been a bit nicer to this picture, but overall it is very nice to me!
Glad you like it, thanks!
