Description [link] : I was led to this photograph by
My version does not, for some inexplicable reason, look like the reference, but does, I think, look like Grace Kelly. I did it pretty fast, in about 3- 3.5 hours, using a B mechanical pencil and 6B graphite. Not my best work, I think, but I like it enough to post it.

Comments, s and etc are always appreciated.

Oh, thank you! Mine isn't anything too marvellous (and it's old ) and apart from a bit of trouble with the likeness, I think yours looks very nice.

Thankyou so much! And thanks for all those s too!
And I couldn't draw like this when I was 13 either, so just practice and persevere.

Not a problem.

I'm working on a picture of her myself. I'm drawing her and Cary Grant from the DVD cover of "To Catch a Theif." It's taking me forever.

Lookin' good so far!
I gather you'd like some critique, though? If you don't.... well, ignore it!
You're getting Cary Grant down nicely already, and I can definitely tell who it is - although be careful to avoid harsh lines; lighten the outline of his nose a bit, I think, and bring his forehead back a little at the top - it's quite sloping.
As for Grace Kelly, I think she still needs some work. Her mouth needs to be a bit fuller and more naturally shaped, and her eyes, which at the moment slope up at the corners, need to slope down (at the bottom they seem almost straight) and be much less well-opened. You've got her face on a slight angle, too, and on the reference her face is pretty straight.
It's a bit hard to tell without shading, but you could possibly also thin her face down a little, too.

Is this charcoal, like your other drawings? Or pencil, like your 'Robert E Lee'? either way, I think it'll turn out wonderfully - I'd love to see it when it's done, so drop me a line!

Oh, and thankyou for the on "Lauren Bacall"!

Right now its soft pencil, though sometimes I start my pictures in pencil as its more forgiving to the eraser.

I'm glad to hear that about Cary Grant, because to me he seemed less recognizable in the pictures. Drawings tend to look different when you've been starring at them for a long time (if that makes sense). Sometimes I have to stop and come back to them.

And, BTW, thanks for the critique; I appreciate all I get. I'm still a beginner, as I've not taken portraiture classes yet, and advice from more experienced people is like gold to me.

I think a lot of people would agree - sometimes it's best just to shut the sketchbook and go away for a couple of days, and then, when you return to the picture, you can see where you went wrong, and also if you should do anything else.
I haven't had any portraiture classes myself. I'm mainly self-taught, (unless you count highschool art) which has its advantages and disadvantages. But I have practiced a lot, so if I can help with a bit of critique, I'm always glad!

You're welcome!
I'm debating Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, and Marlon Brando. I want to do them all eventually of course..but which one next..it's a mystery.
Thank you! Vivien Leigh is one of my favorites.

CurlyQ In reply to Alene [2007-08-08 15:56:14 +0000 UTC]

Definitely..it's hard to decide what I want to stare at next for hours at a time.

Alene In reply to CurlyQ [2007-08-08 16:01:35 +0000 UTC]

My current trouble is there are *too* many people that I could stare at for hours - I've seen so many pictures I want to draw, and I have no time.

CurlyQ In reply to Alene [2007-08-08 16:05:43 +0000 UTC]

Yea exactly...like i'll get spur of the moment strokes of genius and then it's like oh. crap. what about those 356876 other ideas.

Alene In reply to CurlyQ [2007-08-08 16:36:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes! And I'm getting a serious backlog of ideas, because I'm so busy with uni and the like that I haven't actually got time to do *any* of them. I'm being very productive, all the same, even if I'm not producing what I want to....

MadKnifeParty [2007-04-05 20:22:14 +0000 UTC]

you've really got facial tone down - everything is excellent - just one thing that gets me is the slightly too drk shaded teeth - its distracting from how sweet the rest of this is. my two cents.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to MadKnifeParty [2007-04-06 04:06:59 +0000 UTC]

You're right about the teeth, but this is such an old piece, it isn't really surprising. I've got better at teeth since this was done. I'm glad you like the rest of it! Thanks!

I actually have the refernce image in my hands right now.. a famous picture. I think the reason you don't think it looks like the picture is because your lower lip is a little fuller, and your profile is more softened, espescially the far cheekbone. But all the same a lovely picture that I'm going to fave! very well done!

Alene In reply to heartandsoul16 [2007-01-23 02:32:53 +0000 UTC]

The background didn't take too long- it's only crosshatching, rather chunkily, to contrast Grace, and the space wasn't all that big!

Alison,
Grace is THERE in your drawing! Good choice on the darker lipstick, too! That lends itself better to a black and white rendering. You have captured her beauty most wonderfully!!! Especially her eyes! Wow, for a 3.5 hour job, this is absolutely stunning! You HAVE "The Gift"!!! I am truly in awe! Fantastic job!!!
