I like how you made his forehead creased in thought, and those eyes! They really just pull one in with their intensity! Beautiful work!

I love the boldness of the brushwork in this, and the veiled, somewhat malevolent expression of the eyes.

Somehow it really speaks to me. Thank you for not making him too pretty He looks quite real - angsty, sad, lonely and mad at the world around him. He just needs to grow up and develop some snarkiness, and he'll be perfect

Ah perfect depiction! Love teh roughness of the border, and how it filters into the figure. The expression and pose is perfect, and I like how he resembles alan rickman, but isnt dominated by the actor!

AnCatDubh In reply to QueenOfCostumes [2011-07-26 18:13:13 +0000 UTC]

that's funny, I always try to not draw rickman when I draw snape. I suppose there might be more of him in rickman than I thought, then, which is good

QueenOfCostumes In reply to AnCatDubh [2011-07-27 01:51:12 +0000 UTC]

I think Alan Rickman was such a fitting choice for snape that it is almost inevitable to have fan art look like him! But it is certainly an original look.

Oooooh, I was thinking charcoal and here it's gouache! Great work with that, too!

Haha, I think the 3D version was actually rather artfully done, if you have the money to spare. But I don't blame you for waiting. I might of done that... if I were patient enough. XD

AnCatDubh In reply to CloudMonsta [2011-07-26 18:10:17 +0000 UTC]

I'm too stingy for 3D lol - and I guess waiting postpones the end!

That's true! I'm in denial about the end... At the end of the movie everyone's all ahhhhhhh it's over and I screamed out "NEVER OVER! POTTERMORE!" ... then I realized Potter more could be taken many ways. XD

Damn WB for not casting a teenage Snape!! They deserve to be AKd!

I agree! If they couldn't bring back Alec Hopkins for some reason, they should have cast someone else for those scenes. The de-aging on Alan Rickman was impressive, but weird and not that convincing, and I would have wanted to see the really teenaged scenes. I wonder if maybe that's why they cut them - because they knew they couldn't make Rickman fit them in the slightest and so they didn't bother. (Grrrrr, if so!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AnCatDubh In reply to arcanetrivia [2011-07-25 19:27:55 +0000 UTC]

they just didn't ask him! I'm yet to see that de-aging... I reckon the fact that Rickman couldn't play a Hogwarts student is part of the reason why the scenes weren't included - but you could say it's also that they had left Lily out of Snape's worst memory in the first place, and we don't know that it was snape that told of the prophecy to voldemort either in the films if I recall properly? I'm wondering if they also thought that having Alan Rickman play these scenes would make them more powerful than hiring an actor that might not be as good. just a thought. at any rate it's a shame. I hope I don't laugh... what did you think of the film yourself?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

arcanetrivia In reply to AnCatDubh [2011-07-25 20:31:27 +0000 UTC]

what did you think of the film yourself?

I didn't feel cheated out of my $10.50 + $1 service fee to pre-buy the tickets online, but neither did I walk out of there going "Wow! That was awesome! So much better than I thought it was going to be!" and I've been recommending that people see it at a cheap matinee or something if they haven't yet. Out of all the films, hm, I guess it's just kind of in the middle that's hard for me to rank. My favorites are PoA, OotP, and PS, not necessarily in that order, and my least favorite, sadly, is probably HBP - sad, because that's my favorite book! But while both the DH movies weren't as bad as I feared, they left me kind of "meh" in a lot of places. I cringed at Severus's death scene (especially the multiple strikes with thumping noises) but I didn't cry. As *Vizen has said in her journal posts, it's like they failed to engage with my emotions.

Well I saw it yesterday and I must say I rather agree with your impressions. Given I had seen all the disappointed booksnape fans, I was well prepared and so I enjoyed the rest of the film without worrying about PT. I didn't feel like crying or anything either though... It's tricky when you have such a clear image of something because you have imagined it so much - even if they had done it properly, I don't know how much I could have related to it. But yeah, it was weird. My friend who is a simple HP reader (not a huge fan or anything) told me she was a bit disappointed that she didn't feel more emotions throughout the film, which made me happy - meaning it's not just a crazy fan problem.

I'm getting into those square brushes. When I get money I will buy a bunch for oil painting. I love this portrait of waterhouse done with square brushes : [link] it's a small pic unfortunately but the other ones on the web are bad qualiy. I have it in my waterhouse book, it has so much strength. anyway thank you for the compliments

I keep hearing about how wonderful Alan Rickman is in Snape's final moment with Lily. There's no question he's a marvelous actor, but Severus is supposed to be twenty-one in that scene, not in his sixties.

Oh well, as a opera fan I have plenty of practice at imagining a tenor in his fifties is a seventeen-year-old Siegfried. And he dies, like our dear Sev, gazing at a vision of his beloved's beautiful eyes!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AnCatDubh In reply to janach [2011-07-25 19:07:50 +0000 UTC]

haha, I can imagine that. Maybe that's the solution for angry book-snape fans. see more opera. I guess in opera the singers are so far from you you don't see their faces quite that well though... At least from the memories I have (last time I saw an opera, it was Tosca, I was in Italy and hadn't read the story before, so I knew everything was tragic but couldn't quite follow what was going on... still I had a great time).

It would be funny if Alan Rickman started singing in the film

janach In reply to AnCatDubh [2011-07-25 23:43:15 +0000 UTC]

A few years back I saw a tall, skinny Siegfried who did a lot of leaping around; as long as I didn't use my opera glasses I could persuade myself he was a normal obnoxious seventeen-year-old boy, not a pathological man in his forties.

The tale of the Half-Blood Prince, of course, is simply made for opera. Hagen+Tristan=Severus!

Sure they don't look exactly the same, but I don't think people would have minded that much. Everybody was happy with his casting in the 5th film. To me it was more important to have a complete story
