Description Australian infantryman carrying artillery rounds.

When Great Britain declared war on Germany, the near totality of the British Empire joined at the same time. It did not take long to mobilize three divisions to help in North Africa, Italy and the Pacific. Being under the menace of the Japanese forces, Australian could not play a decisive role in Europe.

Wearing an uniform and enthusiasm nearly identical to the one of the Great War, the "Diggers" were an outstanding contribution in the struggle against Rommel in North Africa.

I think a significant  Historical correction is needed here ANZAC = Australian NEW ZEALAND Army Corps.

NZ often get overlooked too much so ! Aussies and Kiwis both fought in the North African Desert (CORRECT)   Aussies withdrew to Defend Australia against the Japanese in 1942 with some understandable urgency. Whilst it was decided with PM Churchill that the  KIWIs ( 2 NZ DIV ) would stay and fight Rommel provided the  the US Marine DIV garrisoned NZ to fill the Defensive gap. They fought Rommel with Allied Forces throughout North Africa and at El Alamien. Meanwhile 3 NZ  DIV was being mustered in NZ  to fight Japanese. Those US Marines then left NZ to start the Island hopping Campaign with TARAWA (Marshall Islands) which was to be the template of further operations. The US Marines then returned to NZ to regroup then left for other later Pacific Battles.

The KIWIS fought throughout  Italy (CASSINO and RIVER PO in particular) and finishing in TRIESTE in what was to become YUGOSLAVIA. That was to be the FIRST Cold War confrontation (I945) where  General TITO (Communist Partisans ) threatened 2 NZ DIV to leave TRIESTE. KIWIs told him (rudely)  where to go, got ready for the fight and stayed. TITO did not subsequently take up the challenge.

There were no Aussie DIV in Italy they had gone back to the Pacific to fight JAPS. 3 NZ DIV then fought in the PACIFIC with US Marines in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and others isolated Island groups. ANZACs have fought together in the BOER war,WWI, WWII, KOREA, MALAYA,  VIETNAM, Afghanistan and Iraq. KIWIs were in BOSNIA,  and with Aussies again  in EAST TIMOR, BOUGANVILLE, SOLOMON Islands

I would like to request a characture of the KIWIs if you can! I must say that the Aussie character displayed is Very Good ! / Spot On and you Sir are a very talented artist having captured their (AU) essence most accurately. As Nations;  AU / NZ - we are ' cousins ' but NEVER confuse us. I surmise bit like CANADIANS and US...... LOL

The main dress difference is that KIWI Troops wore the LEMON SQUEEZER hat whilst the Aussies (as shown) had the SLOUCH HAT. Originally both had the slouch hat ( BOER War ) but KIWIs modified it to be the "Lemon Squeezer " to distinguish between the two Nations. NZ DIV were a proud mixture of Indigenous Maori and NZ Caucasian Troops and this had been the case since the BOER War (NZ Mounted Rifles)

BOTH Countries fought at Gallipolli ( Dardanelles) . Both suffered horrendous losses at that particular place as we did in Flanders, Somme etc in France.  I may seem nothing to some but for a Nation to raise 2 X Inf DIV and have 58 % casualties for a POPULATION of 1.5 million (then) I get sick of us been overlooked. AS this frequently happens to CANADA, SOUTH AFRICA and Colonial AFRICAN /ASIAN troops from various English Commonwealth Colonies  ( Then ) of Africa and Asia.

One other significant difference was that (like the CANADIANS) , the KIWIs worked WITH the UK Forces NOT FOR ! (Even in the BOER War) We were answerable to our respective Governments. So if our DIV Commanders felt we were being exploited for stupid reasons the Brits were politely told to go forth and multiply. Just like Canadian DIV Comd refusing to land in France to cover the Dunkirk withdrawal  or NZ DIV going to be abandoned on Crete by the Royal Navy. So respectively the CANADIAN said NO and the  KIWIs told PM Churchill that the Royal Navy will have to try harder!

Thank you for the rant (but no apologies and no disrespect) Regards;  NIGEL MCQUINLAN, Warrant Officer, Royal NZ Infantry Regiment. (Retired)

ah mate this is fantastic! i showed this to a few of the boys in my section and then the whole platoon and every one of them pulled a cheeky digger grin similar to that on your ANZAC up there. this really shows the spirit our boys are known for, i don't know how you do it but keep it up!

You know, Australia and New Zealand have played large roles in pretty much every major conflict of the 20th Century, as well as a few of the 19th Century conflicts, i.e, The New Zealand Campaign, the Boer War [Late 19th, early 20th Century] and the Boxer Rebellion [early 20th Century]. Much like Canadians, though we may lack the numbers, we more than make up for it in skill, guts and determination alone
The Australians and New Zealanders played a pretty big role in the Vietnam War too, but, as always, it all gets over looked :/

Anyways, the picture rocks dude, very nicely done

Sorry about that; I need to work on being less formal in pretty much everything I write, so thanks for keeping me posted.

Basically, in the real world, most people wouldn't be happy carrying heavy things all the time, yet the infantryman you've drawn here is. Heck, by the way he's swinging his available arm as he walks, he's proud of what he's doing! The fact that you've made me understand and even empathize with a person that isn't real leads me to believe that this piece of artwork works, especially on an emotional level. Your attention to detail and respect towards the subject also add a professional touch to the artwork, and it shows that you really care about what you draw.

Any of that make sense, or should I take a workshop on casual writing?

I like how you emphasize the aggressive, gung-ho posture of the soldier, even though he's carrying all that stuff on him. The shading of the clothing's also wonderful to take in.

"the near totality of the British Empire joined at the same time" Canada's fault for being such rebels by waiting a few days to declare war as well

Didn't get much of a show in Europe from the Japanese Imperial Navy trying to knock on their door steps.

rossmum In reply to GeneraleRusso [2010-10-03 15:32:28 +0000 UTC]

The Slouch hat or Hat KFF is still standard and actually still considered field wear, although almost nobody has worn it in the field since WWII (as far as I know). Getting it dirty is considered disrespectful to our fallen, so we wear our bush hats in the field instead. For everything else, it's the KFF.

AngusBurgers In reply to GeneraleRusso [2010-08-04 23:58:02 +0000 UTC]

The hat was standard, yes.

And no, this is not a stereotype. I've seen pictures of guys dressed like this in the desert of North Africa carrying just as much equipment.

Okay, they were not carrying artillery rounds.

Just as a little tidbit, Aussies were extremely good riflemen. I've heard many opinions from Afrika Korps soldiers - they've never seen anyone that deadly with a rifle before.
And of course, outstanding work Angus, like damn always!

Did you know that during world war 1, the British would always send out the Tasmainians (little island at the bottom of Australia) first when going over the top. The Tassies were farmers and a lot of them knew how to shoot a gun, so they were the best shots.
