Description The first German-made tank to see service! Popular in movies and video games, the Army ordered 100 A7Vs in 1917 with only 20 being delivered in 1918. It weighed 30 tons, 30-15 mm of armor all around and bolstered a 5.7 mm gun, actually the exact same as the 5.7cm Maxim Nordenfelt. If you remember the Mark IV post from earlier, it shares a very special title with the A7V, and that is being one of the first two tanks to engage in a tank vs tank battle. You've probably heard of the battle at Villers-Bocage , but have you heard of the second battle of Villers- Bretonneux? After heavy fighting the Germans were able to take the town and open up the railway junction to Amiens. 3 British Mark IVs were sent into the town, two females armed only with machine guns and the other a male armed with two 6-pounder guns. The A7V, specifically one named Nixe, opened fire on them. The two females were unable to harm the A7V but took significant damage, both of them missing parts of the hull leaving the crew exposed. The female tanks pulled back and the male advanced to avoid being hit by artillery fire. The two tanks continued to shoot at one another, but being on the move gave the Mark IV's gunner an extremely hard time aiming. The Mark stopped for a moment and landed several hits on the A7V forcing the crew to bail out. The next action on the Mark IV's end is questionable,as most of the A7V's crew survived and bailed out of the tank, in which the Mark IV then opened fire on the fleeing crew members killing half of them. Two more A7Vs backed by infantry showed up. The Mark IV was then aided by 7 whippet tanks taking 3 losses until the A7Vs pulling back(with the infantry taking a lot of losses too). The Mark IV now damaged attempted to retreat, but was hit by artillery and motor fire and had to be abandoned.  Delayed this a bit, but still here it is!

Sadly as the case with many unique tanks manufactured in low numbers survivors are almost always non existent or very rare. For the A7V there is one, ONE tank that survives. It was one of the tanks abandoned at Villers-Bretonneux and was recovered 3 months later by Australian troops. As a war trophy it was sent to Australia in 1919 and put on display for the public. It is currently on display in the Queensland Museum....in Queensland Australia.

Also, sir, that should be a '57 mm Skoda' cannon, not '5.7' mm!

The only tank during this conflict with a suspension system.  But was too top heavy and didn't have an adequate cross country capabilities.

Excellent picture! However, I have a question. Where did you get that the A7V weighed 70 tons? Both the German and English Wikipedia say its weight was around 30 tons - and 70 tons seems to be really too much for this vehicle.

Oh, and by the way, how about you draw the K-Wagen? Just a suggestion.

LordWorthing-Topper [2019-01-20 18:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Given the size of the A7V sturmpanzerwagen, it's sometimes surprising to modern eyes how large the crew was and how they were crammed into the brute, the average was about 18 if I recall correctly to man the bow gun, the six machine guns, and drive, maintain and command the thing. Although some unit command tanks had crews as high as 22 people.

Oh hey it's the big box with 18 persons inside! Love that thing!
It was so bad though, this thing couldn't reach 10 kph on road and had only 40mm of space between the ground and the bottom of the tank. But also 18 persons, like, really? That's just too many. Way too many.

To be fair though, this is a WW1 tank We have to ask ourselves if anyone had any idea what they were doing back then

HeliosOne-SolarGod In reply to Arjay-the-Lionheart [2019-01-31 06:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh! well i have no clue what exact tank you should do next (though personally I'd think something in either of the World Wars would always look sick), but what i think would be interesting to see your take at some aircraft? Focke-Wulf Fw 190s or even some Hurricanes or Spitfires, or even the De Havilland Mosquito, British or Canadian. another cool thing would be the artillery/ field guns. tbh all this talk about this has me thinking about a cool art idea for the Vimy Glide. anyways, I'm honoured you asked me for suggestions, and I can't wait to see what you post next!
