Description One day, a fly got caught in a spider's web. As the spider came down to wrap its prey in web, the fly did some quick thinking.

"What a beautiful web you have made" commented the fly. "The design is simply breathtaking".

"Thank you" replied the spider, rather flattered. But she began to start spinning anyway.

"Your eyes!" cried the fly. "You have the most beautiful eyes of any creature I have ever seen. So red and shiny-"

The spider smiled, but did not stop in her spinning.

"You are so beautiful, you are fit to be queen" said the fly, now rather panicky.

"In fact," he continued, "my great-great-great grandmother has the most beautiful crown, made of real spider silk. It would fit you perfectly."

"A crown?" asked the spider, pausing now.

"Absolutely!" agreed the fly. "You must believe me, it is the most beautiful crown--encrusted with dew drops from a rose and the eyes of a butterfly. None but you are fit to wear it. I could bring it to you, if you would let me go for a moment to get it."

The spider considered this a moment. What was one fly to a crown? So, the spider let the flattering fly go, hoping he would bring her back the crown. Of course, he never came back.

Moral: Flattery is a powerful tool.

I like the way you can feel the fly's increasing panic, and how you can almost hear the click in the spider's head when she changes her mind.

Love this. The best part is the butterfly eyes. It's a little detail that the clever fly adds to his yarn to make the spider doubt the lie just long enough to pause. The fly is clearly a writer.

Fix one little thing: Make the hyphen after the word 'crown' an em-dash by adding a second dash. Then this will be perfect.

You're right! It looks so much better that way. I wouldn't say perfect but I was pleased with the way this came out

Perfection is over-rated.

You could still do the duckling one!

Anyway, it is an observation I've seen before with some kind of predatory-prey relationship, but I think you've done a good job saying it so directly and in particular for a young audience. It'd be cool to see this illustrated.

Too lazy

Hey, are you saying it's been done >.> I tell you, there's nothing left to write about anymore.

Laziness is great.

Yep, everything's been done. The trick is adding your own style to it (which has happened here).

ya see, i'm faced with a slight dilemma (or conundrum, take your pick)
... if i put it in the comments i'll feel like i'm hijacking your page & i respect you & your work too much to do that.
... if i post it then you would not be able to use it (as inspiration or whatever) without trolls giving you grief...

i'll figure something out
