Personal aaaaaart.
Realized I still hadn't done any non-comic art of Bibi, so I decided to fix that. Caracals deserve more love <3
Also, don't know why, but watercolors always call for a semi-realistic style to me. I loved painting this! I've been watching TONS of watercolor video tutorials, and I feel like I've learned a lot, so I wanted ti put my teaching to test
I'm having a particularly hard time mixing colours. Whenever I get the tone I like, I realize I have too little for the area I'm painting, so I have to redo the mix, which, we all know, will never be exactly identical to the previous.
I'm also learning how to desaturate colours, AKA making them more gray. This is another mistake I made at the beginning - I used them straight from the tube. And while that does work sometimes, the colours look somewhat unnatural or too saturated.
Have watercolour tips to share with me? By all means do!

Also, you might have noticed that the scanner kind of messed up the colours.
I HATE to have to fix a scanned drawing in Photoshop. I had to add an orange filter because the scanner ate all the orange up.
Also, it didn't detect the clear pastel blue sky behind the character, it was much too pale. So I had to add that too :C

What's good about this! the freaking amazing anatomy of the cats!! The lining looks so cool, like its realistic but here and there angular. love it. This overall looks very professional, very refined, and very good.
Now I admit, this might be more of a personal thing on my part, but the colors seem murky and depressing to me, and didn't leave much of an impact. If the sky was even a touch bluer, or there were some flowers, maybe greener foliage or lighter colored grass, it would have left a lot bigger impact on me.
The one other thing I could complain about is the face of the bigger cat. The outline of the top of the head makes it look like it has a large forehead, combined with the cheekbone that would regularly look stunning, throws the head off. As well, the eyes give it a pervy-look, especially since it'l licking the other cat, and |I think if it somehow had a more peaceful look-eyes closed maybe, or less of a smile, it would change the feeling of the scene. I know that wasn't what you intended to happen, and of course I realize the anatomy plays a part on this.

Oh yes, I see what you mean! I was really afraid of making the colours too desaturated. Messing around with watercolours when you don't quite know what you're doing may lead to that result XD I agree, perhaps adding splotches of brighter colours, like flowers, would have given a while different feel to the picture
And thank you for the tip on the leopard's head too! I agree, it does look kind of awkward

It has been a while since I last critiqued something from the wonderful AFRICA series, though I have never missed one issue!..I keep reading them, and since my time has severely shortened, never had the time again to construct a fair critiue as Arven's wonderful comics deserve!

The watercolor use is something I have NEVER managed to master myself...I find this piece to be magnificent, as Chui bribes Bibi into following along his plans against Africa.
The semi-realistic style you used with them still allows them as much expression and life as your slightly more stylized versions on the comics!
The use of color desaturation, I believe you nailed VERY well! (yet another thing I NEVER managed myself)
These sienna-toned, almost greenish hued shades for their fur and the overall "dry brown" tone to the picture adds up a lot of believability to my liking (real wild cats are rarely fully orange) so...what may I say?
I fidn this piece awesomely well done, and also appreciate the fair use of cat anatomy, whch is superb here (just look at Chui's paw pose, so lifelike and natural looking, the wa in which Bibi's frown of comfort looks just like a house cat's "smile", with her small round eyebrows furrowed to the center of her forehead...the hind leg of Chui and the slightly splayed toes, as many felines pose when they comb or groom their self, or others' fur...
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
I will highly point this, for it struck me as a very cool piece, beautiful to look at, and a great addition for non-comic art for the series!

Devo dire che l' opera è molto bella e riflette chiaramente il tuo stile, con delle linee "dure", spigolose, e marcate. La gamma di colori rispecchia perfettamente quella della savana africana e l'utilizzo dell' acquerello accentua ancora di più questi colori, che li rende "slavati" e ancora più appropriati al disegno e poi le sfumature sono fatte veramente molto bene. Inoltre la presenza del radio collare è molto azzeccata, la quale rende l' opera ancora più realistica. Nel complesso la scena, comunque è molto dolce; l'espressione e la posizione dei due personaggi rende chiaramente l'idea di amore e/o amicizia.
Quindi non mi rimane che farti i complimenti

XD There are countless times where wild creatures break away from what is expected. We humans are foolish enough to think we can know exactly point-on what species will always do in the wild. Instinct doesn't rule everything in the animal kingdom XD it can be broken, and has been shown to be not as dominant in the animal kingdom as we think. Either that, or we are all ruled by some sort of instinct-trigger, even as humans. But either way, I don't ship these two, though I do love this picture!

That's very true! We know really little of how animals behave in nature. That's why their behaviour is always unpredictable, no matter how much we say we know about them.

Oh yes I watched that video^^ It happens more commonly than we think, although the great majority of time it's a nursing female and a young calf/cub from another species, often because of the female's maternal instinct.
I don't think Chui would ever be so keen on taking care of someone unless it was his kin XD
