Description There really is no other way to describe it; this place is a tourist trap. Over one million people come though this calm looking area every week and most of them are foreigners who are finding China more and more accessible. Every day this river has large boats ferrying people down to the tourist towns along the karst hills in Guiling, China. When I took this photo I was on a little bamboo raft just like the one in the picture being pushed up the river by a guy in the back with a big long bamboo pole. As we went up the river I saw a lot of people looking at us from their large metal boats motoring down the river, I think they were pretty amused to see such an antiquated little raft on the water and many people waved or took pictures.

I don't think I could go there and just be a tourist. It's too amazing. I think I would want to stay.
Great shot and I love the history you give in the descriptions.

that's why it's important to distiguish between a traveller and a tourist.

Glad to see you in China working with film and doing a great job BTW.

Your a real artist man. My parents are in China right now for 6 weeks on business.

Keep it up.

I don't know if my parents are heading through your area or not...but it's so hard to even talk to them from so far away. The phone connection cuts out and they are always really quiet. They may have sent an email...but I don't know or not. I hear that in China you can't even look up stuff on the internet like about the Tinneman Square incident etc...

thanks thanks, im not quite ready to make the full move to digital, film still calls to me (I just bought a case....)

China is pretty loud pretty much everywhere in the city. I head people on their car horns all day and night in my apartment, just gota tune it out with loud music.

And yeah, there is a lot of stuff that you cant look up here, like all of wikipedia...

It's a wonderful area, but at least when I was there (in 1999), it was big enough not to be completely awash in tourists.

Tourist trap or not, it is a beautiful place. It is a place I long to visit. But I won't act like your typical tourist.

But well this tourist traps gives work to local people, here in central America we try to create touristic places because economy strongly benefits from it

its the same here, the local economy blooms but here they kinda forget about everything else and just want to make money...thats why a lot of the places here in china that has a fee to get in the door is usually not worth it

Yeah, Guilin is definately a tourist trap, and we went to just about every one of them, haha. If it weren't for the heat though, it wouldn't have been so bad.

I'm not really sure where that is, but if it's anything compared to Guangzhou or Zhouqing, then I feel your pain man. xD

I was there in one of those metal boats you describe. Yes these rafts look small and antique, but I would rather go with one of them... Is this the turn where the mountainside is said to contain many houses? I could imagine there to be quite a few actually, if they're the extreme abstract kind of houses...
