Description Decade after decade, and year after year, Sonic has made a few eras that are debatable for what they did wrong and what they did right. There are five known eras that are recognizable for their actions and how they role through both the marketing and fanbase. With that means said, let's have a talk about Sonic eras, shall we?

Classic Era - 1991 to 1998
Back before the game was made, he used to be a rabbit, until Sega decided to make him a hedgehog instead. His name was gonna be Mr. Needlemouse, but has been changed to Sonic due to the speed power he has been given. Also, he used to have a pilot love interest that is a human woman which is an obvious classic reference to Roger & Jessica Rabbit, but they rigged her from existence so Sonic can go lone-zoned. So Sonic Team has been working hard on the first game ever released on the Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear titled "Sonic the Hedgehog". It was just plain simple. By the time it has been released in 1991, despite the battle between Mario and Sonic for the game sales, it became a huge hit. Every kid loves playing it in every way, they discovered that a hedgehog that is slow at running does the opposite of it's speed, he runs fast. Later on, it gets more games. The sequel is where Sonic's new friend Tails gets in where he is a fox that can fly with his two tails and is a mech genius. The non-exisent story becomes more understandable as it tries new things like the spin dash, flying, gaining more speed when going through slopes, and the Death Egg that is a Star Wars reference. Next is Sonic CD, which wasn't released on the Genesis at all, it was released on the forgotten console Sega CD, and they introduce Sonic's self-declared girlfriend Amy Rose and his new rival Metal Sonic. The time travelling idea was going to be used for the actual sequel, but they used the idea for CD instead so we can explore the past, present, and future. And then finally the third game has been released in not one but two separate cartridges. Sonic 3 is intended to be the first part while Sonic & Knuckles is intended to be the second part. However, they did hire a famous 90's singer Micheal Jackson to do some of the soundtrack but most likely has never been credited whatsoever. When the two parts of the game combined to one, Sonic 3 & Knuckles has got to be one of the longest Sonic games there is, and it sold greatly too. And then we have the other Sonic games, which are pretty strange if you think about it. Spinball is just a pinball, Chaos & Triple Trouble are original Game Gear titles, 3D Blast may have it's 3D tryouts but failed in poor quality, Tails has his own game but only released on the Game Gear, Knuckles has his own game too but only released on the 32X, even the bad guy Dr. Robotnik has his own but as a Tetris spoof, and they made a 3D racing game Sonic R for the Saturn. Despite some weird games, the shows on the other hand are great. The first one they made is inspired to be like Looney Tunes, Satam is set to be focused on the comic world of Sonic but on screen, and Underground is a rock sibling adventure. For people's thoughts about the Classic Era, they think that it was an amazing era where obviously the old stuff gets to be praised of how there were supposed to be, including the cartoons. As for my thoughts about it, I agree, it really is a golden era of how Sonic was marketed for. With so many rereleases over the years for newer consoles, they will always be an icon, except some weird ones.

Adventure Era - 1999 to 2004
Moving on to the new era starting in 1999, they have released an old OVA on VHS tape and online that were only two episodes made in Japan but has been smooshed into a movie, which the fanbase is interested about. Then we get a new Sega console called the Dreamcast which can provide 3D animation at it's early designs. The first ever title to be released that is 3D (not counting 3D Blast) is Sonic Adventure. They decided to not only add new characters, a story, new gameplay mechanics, but they get to finally redesign the main four heroes Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The newer ones are Big and E-103 Gamma, while the supportive one is Tikal and the temporary bad guy is Chaos. When that game was released, it was amazed by how many copies it was sold by being praised of how awesome and written it was. Later on for Sonic's 10th anniversary that is said to be celebrated, it gets a sequel with a new story, new cooler characters Shadow & Rouge, and a new way to experience it. That one gets the most liked scores and sold copies than ever for now. Unfortunately, the Dreamcast has been discontinued, so they made a new game for the Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2 for the first time, titled Sonic Heroes, which is said to be a third Adventure game. Heroes has a lot of great game mechanics by having all three characters at once to be useful. Then, we have three titles for the Gameboy Advance that are made by THQ. And then finally the 4Kids company decided to make another show based on a video game franchise (which is Pokemon) titled "Sonic X", which is actually liked by the kids and fans who love Sonic, but as for me, that show isn't great. For people's thoughts about the Adventure Era, they think that it is terrific due to how written those three games were along with a Sonic show, along with so many praises of how iconic Sonic Adventure 2 is. As for my thoughts about it, well, maybe it went a little overboard on the campaign, but it is a pretty good era to start 3D animation. Even the first two Adventure games have been ported to the Gamecube and PC, except Heroes for the PC.

Dark Age - 2005 to 2009
The Adventure titles are well-known to make the franchise stay bright along with Sonic X to be watched on television, the franchise continues on to make even more of a brighter future, right? .....no. They did plan to make a game where Sonic uses guns, but instead gave the idea to Shadow, and now Shadow the Hedgehog has his very own game for the first time, which sets in an edgy tone with lots of guns, story paths, and missions. When his game is released, it has been brutally broken down by the upset fans and the people that are not interested of buying it which has a low selling chart. With Shadow's game out of the way, 2006 is heading up for Sonic's 15th anniversary, will things get better this time? .....of course not. First they made a weird racing game Sonic Riders that is set to have Sonic characters ride on floating hoverboards. And then it gets worse, they released two titles for the DS which seemed okay but has a complicated fanbase along with a bad soundtrack, which introduced Blaze. And then it gets worse, they rereleased the 1991 classic for the Gameboy Advance and it sold very poorly due to the framerates, screen crunch, lags, slow speed, worse audio, and a very lack of content. And then it got to the absolute WORST of the worst, they released a new game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 for the first time, but not just any new game, a new game with a very dark twist. They did brought back the idea of the human woman love interest, but turned out to be a hateable chatacter. They changed everyone's designs as well, and they all look terrifying. The story is bad, the gameplay mechanics are awful, the controls are terrible, the loading screens are tideous, and the quality looks like it came from old Windows. Sonic 2006 released in stores which may sold more than Shadow did, but has the most atrocious ratings ever. Next, they make two titles for the PSP...okay. And then they make the Wii-exclusive titles that are set to be storybook adventures, one is a bland Aladdin one, and the other is a solid King Arthur one. And then they decided to make a new engine for their new game called Sonic Unleashed. They fixed Sonic's look by having him cartoony like from the classics. It has the idea of playing as him in two ways, at day where he is a fast hedgehog, while at night where he is a strong fighting yet slow Werehog. That game has been hated in a critical score, but has been praised later on along with a great selling chart. For people's thoughts about the Dark Era, they used to not enjoy it back then, and now they do...for no reason. They seemed to like Sonic 2006 with a passion due to the "so bad that it is good" excuse. As for my thoughts about it, yeah, I agree with the past critics that the Dark Era is an utter nightmare of the franchise and basically Sonic at his worst. It's cool that Unleashed gets to be playable in 1080p with 60fps on newer consoles, but an okay Shadow game and a terrible Sonic 06 are graded so low from the critics that they don't get to be brought back to life in newer consoles.

Meta Era - 2010 to 2019
After the chaos, they decided to make a two-part game that is similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series "Sonic the Hedgehog 4", that was released on a phone but then became actual console games for the bigger most part, which sets Sonic to do his original 2D routes but in his relevant older age. Much like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it also gets to have two separated games, Episode 1 being the first part while Episode 2 being the second part, and Episode Metal being the prequel part that takes place after CD. It has mixed reviews while some fans really hate those, but those titles were hyped to be released. Next is another Wii-exclusive game which is actually part of the main series, which also gets a DS version, otherwise known as Sonic Colors. They made the gameplay mechanics funner by adding wisps, 2D & 3D platforming, and a greater experience to play. By the time it has been released, it was actually credited and scored pretty well, the franchise is starting to become brighter as it seems. Then, Sonic's 20th anniversary shows up which made us become worried about the 2006 problem, but then the trailer released to show us two Sonics, past and present, running through the stage, and they were so hyped. The title is called Sonic Generations, and it is said to bring back how good Sonic was from the Classic Era, to the Adventure Era, and finally the Modern Era which may have two stages from two dark age ones but only has one stage from a relevant one. When it has been released in stores, along with the 3DS version, it has an amazing huge selling chart with an amazing critic score and have great reviews. Heck, I even liked that game. Then, we get a Wii U-exclusive game (and 3DS too) called Sonic Lost World, which is set to have a lot of Mario vibes, and has a mediocre rating score as well. Next is a new series called Sonic Boom, which has a great concept on paper, but has released a total mixed bag game that is said to be "Worse Than Sonic 2006", with two 3DS titles, and a T.V. show about it which is really good. Next we have the 25th anniversary that focuses on Sonic's crossover with Lego Dimensions, and a year later it makes two games in one year, Mania and Forces. Mania is said to be "Best Sonic Game Ever" as it is a new 2D classic Sonic game that takes us back to the 90's. Forces on the other hand has a great idea of having to make whatever Sonic character you want to make and play as it, but takes to a war route as it also gets a mediocre rating score. And the last two are the racing game and the new Mario & Sonic Olympic Games title. For people's thoughts about the Meta Era, they think it is the worst due to how many "bad games" there are with "poorly written" storytelling. As for the my thoughts about it, honestly, this has got to be the best era of Sonic. It has two titles that saved the franchise twice, five underrated titles, and an awesome Sonic Boom show. Sonic himself has succeeded himself to prove how awesome he can be from the golden past to the colorful present.

Renaissance Era - 2020 to Present
Back in 2020, they finally released a Sonic movie to the big screen with a help of Paramount & Sega, it has been doing great thanks to the fans who loved it. And then they rereleased Sonic Colors to newer consoles with new content, graphics, and controls. And then they also rereleased the classic titles to one thing, with all of them being widescreen, having a drop dash, and removing the Micheal Jackson music to add in the unused ones from the PC version. And then they made a sequel of the movie with Tails and Knuckles in it, and it actually gets better. And then recently we get a brand new game that is open world "Sonic Frontiers" where the fans cried of toxicity of what they truly wanted for years, it also gets a great rating with some pretty good reviews. And finally we get a new show Sonic Prime that has been released only on Netflix. So far everyone is considering this new era the best, but for me, this era is turning out to be bright for the franchise that shows us every game released that is underrated, classic, or phenomenal at best and overrated, bland, or abysmal at worse. Not to mention that Sonic Frontiers did turn out to be so good that it gets a DLC plan in 2023, and some people say there is even going to be more game rereleases soon before March 2023.

And our talk is finished, I hope if you enjoyed it. See ya later, ladies and gentlemen!
