Description More conceptual art for the Roan RPG. I have already done drawings for light and heavy manipulators that the ponies can use in the game, but I needed to finish the drawings for the medium manipulators.

The medium manipulators proved to be something of a challenge since they have to be more substantial than the light version, but not as massive as the full body exoskeleton of the heavy unit. It fits into a niche between the two other units but I wanted to make certain they would not be mistaken for either the light or heavy model.

I wanted the unit have more strength than the light manipulator, but I didn't want it nearly as bulky as the heavy. However it need to provide some bracing, support, and protection to the wearer. Finally it dawned on me that what I was looking for was an equivalent of the orthopedic braces they will give individuals who have sustained injuries to their knees or ankles. Except in this case the bracing is there to help keep the accident from happening in the first place.

Now you won't be galloping around with these things on because they are not light but you can probably trot wearing them. Also since they have thick soles you'd want to wear boots on your hind legs with a slight platforms to them to make all your legs the same length. Besides the medium manipulators are meant to be worn around places wear steel-toe shoes would be appropriate anyways.

Thanks. The manipulators were one of the things I went back and forth with to get right.

I just love the idea and style of these gloves. It just gives me so many of my own ideas. owo

When I final hit a upon a solution I was so happy. I still want to explore the concept and see if I can refine it further for future Roan modules.

Nice design (and I get the "Rosie the Riveter" reference).

This pony-tech you've got going here is always amusing.

Was there any mechanical thought put into these or are they just fantasy devices? No shame in that fantasy, mind you. As an engineer I merely find the mechanical aspects of your concepts most intriguing.

Beyond the jointing and articulations of the manipulators and how a pony would put them on that is extent of the development for them. If you are asking for wiring diagrams or load bearing capacity of joints I am afraid I can not provide you that information.

I imagine that these could be made purely mechanical, no wiring required. I may have to draw a couple designs just to settle my curiosity.

I don't think I've seen the light version of the manipulators.  I take it that they are for delicate or simple, everyday work that doesn't deal with heavy machinery, items, or strong forces?

Here is the light manipulators, and they are primarily intended for precise, fine, detail work.

Has it been produced yet? The hind leg version? Think of all the acrobatics!

Baron-Engel In reply to 0Alfa [2016-03-24 04:43:20 +0000 UTC]

It is not impossible for a pony to wear them on all four legs. If I to understand correctly it is simply a mattered of whether the pony has received the proper training.

Proper training..? Ah; to exercise better control. Oh; and I must ask though concerning that: how are these manipulators controlled?
   - The joints of the hooves (Like our wrists?)?
   - Neural Connection (Too Advanced?)?
   - Or perhaps the fingers are "semi-locked" and that the user has to manually position the fingers?

Ponies got to be able to use dexterity.
Hooves are somewhat cumbersome.

Well they do have gecko hooves but little fingers are handy at times.

Small things do require the little touch fingers can do.
Those are really a good idea.

My feelings about this is a strange mixture of uneasiness, amazement, and curiosity.

Baron-Engel In reply to WidowPeak [2016-03-23 23:15:52 +0000 UTC]

I imagine that is a feeling that many older ponies in the Roan world would feel to especially when they were first introduced. Watching these strange devices doing their master's bidding.

This probably ends when they realice how amazing fingers are for back scratches.

Interesting details. It really looks logical, like something that would be worn in a multitude of accupations. Good work Baron.

Thanks, I wanted the devices to have that diesel punk quality to their design.

DrunkenDragonDirge [2016-03-23 22:48:10 +0000 UTC]

it's very neat to see how it works, and is the control based on the muscle groups near the joints for this? or more about the knee equivalent?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Baron-Engel In reply to DrunkenDragonDirge [2016-03-23 23:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Primarily the manipulators use aether crystals which are commonly used in the game to provided power and input to devices. The crystals can read/sense neural inputs and translate that into movement and force.

DrunkenDragonDirge In reply to Baron-Engel [2016-03-24 02:57:02 +0000 UTC]

So its reading/scrying on the individuals electrical nuances to do this. If that is the case, could the same be used as a weapon by training the individual with a particular suit that he is acting not at the speed of thought, but the speed of impulse in a more military minded application? Such as training them to react pre-emptively as martial conditions the body to do but in this suit as the conduit for reacting infinitely quicker than just conditioning can provide?

Baron-Engel In reply to DrunkenDragonDirge [2016-03-24 04:31:03 +0000 UTC]

If I am too understand correctly yes. I also believe that research is going on in Roan to specifically develop this capability. However I would double check with before taking that as the gospel.

DrunkenDragonDirge In reply to Baron-Engel [2016-03-24 05:21:01 +0000 UTC]

It seems one of the things that popped into my mind was the old exo-suits kind of idea from way on back. Especially since its an unconscious control for the manipulations here. It's all muscle memory, just a matter of drilling it into folks. Its a why of martial arts, that you can tap into that controlled muscle memory. But thank ya for the answer on this anyhow. How it developes, i'll have to look into more then. Thank you for the answer.

That raises a question though, would ponies (Well anyone) that use these extensively have to deal with the nuance of their magic getting attuned to this? A phantom limb syndrome when its not used?
