Could they tell how long the cat lived after losing its fangs? Did it then simply starve, or did get support through a social group? Anyway, the drawing is wonderful!

From what I could collect from the literature provided at the museum, the fossil skull that I based this illustration off of was of an animal that had lost it sabers and continued to live. Studies indicated that it continued to attain sustenance after the loss of it sabers and was able to age within a social group. The skull was of an adult cat so it probably put in its time as a hunter and was able to access carcusses when it was unable to hunt. These are all best guess speculations based off of known science. It tells a pretty cool story. I do appreciate the comment. Thank you.

Or he could have lost them in a fight- there's a dire wolf skull with a chunk of smilodon fang projecting from the cranium. While Smilodon teeth were great for puncturing flesh, they couldn't break bone.

The interpretations are endless! Maybe he could have been a patriarch amongst the group and led many assaults on dire wolves over a kill. A well weathered cat is a knowledgeable survivalist.
