Description Happy 150th birthday, dear Kansas.

Today Kansas is most famous for being the home of a certain girl and her little dog, and sometimes it's easy to forget the very big role that Kansas had in shaping the history of the United States.

After all, the Civil War was born in Bleeding Kansas.

The simple version of the story goes like this: Between 1854 and 1858, anti-slavery "free-staters" (also known as Jayhawkers) and pro-slavery "Border Ruffians" fought a series of bloody skirmishes in the border towns of the Kansas Territory and Missouri. The issue was whether or not Kansas would enter the union as a free state or a slave state. It was right on the border of North and South, and Missouri, its neighbor, was a slave state. Its future was fair game.

And so, towns were burned, elections were sabotaged, entire families were massacred...

Finally, on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the union as the 34th state, a free state. Less than three months later, the Civil War would begin.

Basically, Bleeding Kanas was when shit finally got real. The slavery question had suddenly gone from a heated Congress-floor debate to a full-fledged guerilla war. There was no turning back...

So yes, happy birthday, Kansas. It's certainly a special one. Never forget where you came from and what you've been through. Don't let the prejudices within you take control of your mind. You're better than that.

Ad astra per aspera.

I have done quite a bit of stuff about Kansas, but I just haven't posted it here. So, here's a little bit of info:

Kansas

Human Name: Laura Brown
Age: 150 (17)
Capital: Topeka
Population: 2,818,747
Largest City: Wichita
___

I suppose I should mention, as a sort of disclaimer, I'm from Johnson County. If you're from Kansas, you'll know why that is significant.

I love your depictions of Kansas! I'll be honest- I always saw Kansas as male, but that's probably my own bias. When I first got into Hetalia, (or at least the only time I was "into" it), I was abroad, and everybody there told me that I was what they thought of when they heard of "Kansas". Which is hilarious, because I'm a city-boy from Wichita. XD

In any case, I love the art... I hope I get to see lots more.

Johnson County, my neighbor when I still visit Prairie Village, a hop skip and a jump from MO. I do love how you decided not to white wash that aspect our states history. Doing just a brows with Kansas and this is first to remember that name. Beautiful encorperaton of all aspects of the states familiarity though I'm suprised your Dorthy is blond, unless that is tip of the hat to the heavy Russian/German population that founded the state, as well as the Irish and Italians.

Hi! I just wanted to tell you that OH MAN THIS IS REALLY COOL. I'm from Kansas and I've actually got my own Kansas OC. I haven't seen a lot of good Kansas!OC works so I was FREAKING OUT when I saw this! Especially since you did Bleeding Kansas art oh man, just...asdflkskldfj.

I've been looking at your other state art and it's all really awesome too! ;w;

Also I laughed when you said you were from JoCo since that's where I grew up as well and I know EXACTLY why that's significant.

Thank you so much.

Kansas in general is so unloved. It's actually a very interesting state! I'm guilty too, though, I admit...I'm hardly in Kansas anymore so I don't spend as much time thinking about it as I should.

I feel like the rest of Kansas hates JoCo. haha. Whenever I go west of Topeka (which isn't often I admit) and tell people I'm from Olathe, they give me this look like, "OHH thaaat explains it." It's also frustrating trying to explain to people out of state that yes, I live in Kansas AND I live in a fairly large city. I feel like it just blows their minds.

POOR KANSAS. I think everyone just sort of assumes it's all...endless fields of nothingness and Dorothy.

And haha, yeah, JoCo gets a bad rap, I guess because it's one of the richest counties in the nation and so everyone assumes we're all a bunch of "spoiled Johnson County kids." Even though that is so not true.

Sorry for the late reply! I've been busy with finals week. ^^'

Yeah pretty much. Though, to be fair, I sometimes find myself stereotyping western Kansas that way myself. I think I sort of have the whole "there's nothing of note west of Topeka" mindset going on, haha. For shame, for shame. It's just because I've honestly never really been west of Topeka. I feel like that's a common sort of thing, and part of the reason people from the other parts of the state look down on JoCo. Like, "you don't even bother coming to visit us and learn what it's really like, you just stay in your own little wannabe-east-coast world."

So guilty as charged, I suppose.

btw, have you ever heard this song? haha. [link] (I have no idea why it's Naruto...)

Haha sorry, late replies again. I really need to check my dA more often...

Also omg that song. I've never heard it and somehow being set to Naruto only makes it funnier...

Ahaha, I HAVE been west of Topeka, many times, and let me assure you, there isn't THAT much. >.>' So much of it is farmland and small towns. I suppose Dodge and Wichita count as big cities, but it really is a different culture outside the metro area. XD

I am convinced that that is why we have counties listed on our license plates. So that we know who is against who against even on the road. (j/k)

I've only been to Wichita once, and even then it was more just like driving through. I've seen more of California than I have of Kansas, which is actually kind of sad, now that I think about it.

Well, actually I've been to Abilene several times, and Manhattan. But I guess Manhattan is KState, so it doesn't really have western Kansas culture anyway. Oh, and Hays. But that is also a college town, so...

Gah I have got to get out more.

No, hopefully not. I'm working on the other ones whenever I get time and inspiration. The next ones I'll probably finish are Kansas and Illinois because I've drawn them but they don't have profiles that I can reference back to.

I live in Kansas. I hate Kansas. It's like, the worst place I've ever lived in in terms of other people here... close-minded, Church-obsessed, bad drivers in any form of weather... And common sense is non-existent. The weather absolutely sucks and no matter how much snow there was on the ground the schools, at least in my district, never let us have a snow day. One day some kids and their mom died trying to get to school with thick ice and 3 feet of snow all over the place because school didn't cancel... And everyone in the "better" cities, like the Johnson County area, have that "nothing bad ever happens to anyone anywhere" mentality while people in other counties, even nearby, are having terrible times getting along, and it drives me NUTS. I hate Kansas, I really do. At least, I hate present Kansas.

HOWEVER, its history is amazing and so cool. And this character of yours and this picture and the scene you've put her in and the blood... it's just so... well, it's terrible but at the same time it's wonderful. She's really pretty and the sunflowers are amazing and I can't even begin to describe how the blood and the gun makes me feel... this is an amazing picture and I absolutely adore it! <3

Heh. I totally understand everything. I grew up in Johnson County, and yeah...lots of people there don't care a bit about anyone outside their little bubble of affluence. Soccer moms, row after row of beige subdivision houses, chain restaurants, strip malls--that's what Kansas is to me. I definitely understand why the rest of Kansas hates JoCo, sheltered anomaly as it is. My city used to have personality and a life of its own, before they torn down its historic downtown in the name of urban renewal. Now it's just like any other suburb in middle America.

I never realized what we'd lost until the spring of my 8th grade year. I was on the verge of failing my Kansas history class, due to a phase of teenage rebelliousness. My teacher could tell that I could do so much better, so he gave me a second chance. If I traveled around eastern Kansas visiting various historic sites and writing a report about them, he wouldn't fail me. I went to every single place on his list, and then some. It just pulled me in, the history all around me that I'd never seen before.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the pic. I love it when my pictures inspire such long comments. It means I get people thinking.

Thank you, thank you! Someone else who gets how JoCo is. Ah. I was worried my husband and I were the only ones OTL

<3 I'm glad you liked my long comment. I was worried when I saw the reply that you were mad at me, but once I read it I was really relieved~ Hee~ Again, you're picture is really great <3

Oh whoa, this is really really nice. It's very well-executed, and very powerful. I love how it's, on first look, just a hardy-looking pioneer girl in a field of flowers, but then you see the blood and the gun and WHOA there is more intensity.
Awesome!
