I understand exactly where you're coming from man, I use to ask people who had really interesting mane styles how they were able to do it, but to no avail. Hmm... let's see, I typically start out with the overall sketch in Paint Tool Sai, or Photoshop, create a layer below that and name it something like "Mane", and in that layer I will lay down the base color for that, in this case, the mane color. Once I have the base color filled in and looking the way I want it to, I'll create a layer on top of that, while using Paint Tool SAI, I'll check the "Clipping group" button, that way I only draw over the layer beneath it and not go out of that layer. I start by using a typical hard round brush with a darker color than the base color and draw the strands of hair in the direction that the hair is laying, I do that about three times, the first two are with a darker hue than the base, and the third time is with a color lighter than the base, that makes for a good highlight. Don't go overboard with the darks and lights it though, only do it enough times until you get the results that you want. Now, this is how I achieve the individual strand look, simply make another layer on top of your other mane layers and just make some stray strands that make your mane and tail look natural, and again, don't go overboard with it, just do it enough times until it gets the "right" look. I hope that helps, because I know that manes can be a hard thing to draw at times and I'd love to help if I can, and if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help! ^^

oops, sorry bro, I didn't realize which Vinyl Scratch pic was being talked about at first, but now I see! Okay, let's see, if I was going to draw it traditionally, I would start it off as I said in my earlier reply, draw the mane shape/style first. After that I would lightly fill in the mane with the color I intend for it to be, remember, don't draw too hard or it won't work very well. Once I have lightly applied the color for the mane, I would find a darker hue of that color and create single strands of hair onto my mane where it is furthest from my light source. I would gradually go from dark to light, making sure that as I am drawing that the change in value is consistent with my light source. You may also experiment with a lighter color to see if you can pull off some highlights, otherwise I'd advise that you just leave it as it is and don't worry about getting any lighter, either way you should get a good result, just so long as you are following your light source! Light is everything, and so long as you follow that you should get a good mane result. Remember, the closer your lines are together the darker it will appear, and as you gradually separate the lines the lighter they should appear. Try experimenting with that on a piece of paper and see how it works for you, because that's how I find how most things work is by experimentation... a lot of experimentation really! XD I hope what I have said helps you, and if you want I could try to help you even more, and I could also give ya a few links to some awesome tutorials online and that I have faved in my favorites on dA! ^^
