Description The small craft slammed into the ground with an ear shattering roar, sending sand, rocks and dune fruit exploding in all directions.  Debris showering all around him Soorn dropped his trowel and sprinted for the cover of the surrounding trees.  He watched in horror as the metal object dug a massive furrow in the ground for nearly a hundred yards before it came to a jarring stop at the edge of the field.  The blast still ringing in his ears Soorn crept back into the open, his caution quickly becoming concern as he realized there might be people in the crash.  The ship design was not Jssfloon.  That was readily apparent as he ran towards the steaming vessel.  Jssfloon was a vacation planet but the little agricultural island of Nool rarely received off-world visitors.  Tourists and businessmen usually arrived at the massive starport on the largest island of Filniss, nearly a hundred miles to the east.  For some reason this little craft was far off course...and now clearly damaged.

He reached the crater that had moments ago been flat ground, growing rows of healthy plants.  Even as he searched the craft for an opening he realized he had just lost over half of his yearly crop.  But that didn't matter now.  Anyone who had been in a crash like this at the very least must be stunned.  He gingerly touched the surface and the metal had thankfully cooled already.  He found the seams of a hatch with a small plasteel window.  Ominous flickering light could be seen inside  Fire.  There was a control box near the hatch but the panels were labeled in a language he had never seen before.  With an upper hand he stabbed frantically at it hoping he would quickly come upon the right sequence.  The manic method paid off.  In moments there was a grating screech of tortured metal as the door slid to the side, coming to a jerky halt halfway open as it caught in it's dented frame.  Soorn coughed as smoke and chemical fumes billowed from the opening.

"Hello?"  He called.

There was no reply.

He had to go in.  If there was anyone inside they needed help.  He turned his head away pulling in a deep breath of fresh air and holding it.  Jsslfoon could hod their breath for a good forty minutes.  He shut his nostril slits tight and slid his clear, second lid over his eyes.  They protected his eyes under water, they could protect them here too.  Without another moment of hesitation he slipped inside.

The craft was small, barely larger than the family room in his home.  Tangles of sparking wires hung dangerously from the ceiling.  A console was afire, torn from it's place and laying on the floor like a broken mushroom.  If there had been lights they were dark now.  Some sort of coolant billowed in rushing clouds from near the back of the room.  For a brief moment he prayed that it was some sort of unmanned probe, perhaps a weather monitor or some other automatic device because, by the Colors he hoped no one was in there.  But the thought was fleeting.  There on the floor, barely visible through the chemical haze was a small crumpled figure.

Soorn moved to it in an instant.  The creature was a good deal smaller than himself with four limbs, one of which looked badly mangled.   A sticky red substance covered the left side of it's head and torso and pooled on the floor beneath it.  It may not have been purple but Soorn was sure it was blood.  It wasn't moving.  There was no flicker of pain on it's face, it wasn't calling for help, he couldn't even see any signs of breathing.  It had to be dead.  By the look of the poor broken thing he almost hoped it was dead.  But he couldn't take that chance.  If it was alive he wanted to help it and he wasn't about to stay in this burning ship to learn how to take this alien's pulse.  As carefully as he possibly could he slipped both right arms under it's back and lifted it's legs with his left.  Despite the flames around him he straightened up slowly so as not to jar the battered creature.  It was as limp as kelp in his arms.

To Soorn's surprise it's lips moved.  It was slight, almost imperceptible in the haze but it was there.  His ears hadn't picked up the word, but his translator had.  "Dad?"

His hearts tied themselves into knots.  It was alive.  And it was a child....

Thanks! I tried to make it seem like a real place as much as I could. Sociology and economy are things I tried to think about.

It was a terrible crash.    It's quite the miracle that he survived.  If Soorn hadn't been there to drag him out he certainly wouldn't have.

Oh, so Rover is actually younger than Flyspur! I wasn't realizing that at first.

Poor little Rover. I'm glad he had such a kind alien as Flyspur to rescue him though.

chill13 In reply to FeatherQuilt1988 [2015-02-14 01:11:33 +0000 UTC]

This isn't actually Flyspur. They are actually similar in age. Rover meets Flyspur when he is sent to a Jssfloon school.

The story is in the description. This is an older Jssfloon named Soorn. But he does resemble Flyspur a bit so I understand your confusion.

Oops! I'm so sorry. I apologize, I was speed-reading this last time because I still had a lot of messages to answer (I did totally read the one of Rover and the alien peace child word-for-word though ), and when I did catch Soorn's name I thought it was the species itself.

So the Jssfloon have more than one heart, like the Timelords on Doctor Who? (I'm not actually in that fandom, but lots of my friends are, so I know about the whole two-heart thing. )

chill13 In reply to FeatherQuilt1988 [2015-02-15 17:42:03 +0000 UTC]

That's okay. You weren't alone in that assumption.

Good question. Jssfloon actually have four hearts arranged in a vertical row along their spine. They don't use all of them all the time. Only three hearts are active when they sleep and when they are injured and bleeding they can go into a kind of hibernation called 'blood sleep' where they are only functioning on one heart. It keeps bleeding down to a minimum.

Wow! You truly have a great imagination! "Blood sleep," I like how they even have a special term for that.

Yes. For such a peppy, happy-go-lucky guy Rover does have a pretty traumatic past. It's probably a good thing he dosent remember it.......I wonder if he would be so chipper if he remembered all that has happened to him.

John-AM [2015-01-17 01:56:07 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Was wondering how that all happened. Well done. How is this Soorn connected with Flyspur? Related or no? The way you made his facial hair, he kinda strikes me as like an Irishman. That species is rather cool!
I don't really think the filter is necessary. I don't think you go into that much detail, in the writing or image, to make it 'mature'. (besides that I wouldn't see it, as I've still kept those settings off)
Also, may I ask, have you come up with what did happen to Rover's parents? Or if so would you rather not reveal spoilers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-01-17 07:00:36 +0000 UTC]

I debated for a long time whether or not to reveal this bit of Rover's history. After all, he doesn't remember it himself.
(As of now) No. Soorn and Flyspur are no relation. Good question.

Yes. I know what happened to Rover's parents. And yes....spoilers.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 20:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I'm dying to find out! The wait will make it more exciting for me when you do reveal it, I suppose.

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-01-17 21:58:37 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I don't know how much of that Rover will ever find out..his crew might end up knowing more about it than he does.

Speaking of Rover's parents.  Don't know if you've seen this pic or not...

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 22:37:52 +0000 UTC]

No, I hadn't noticed that in my travels through your gallery! Nice. You made their features match his well. Now I at least have their appearances in my memory banks to imagine.

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-01-17 23:02:37 +0000 UTC]

It took me forever to design his dad. I went through quite a few different looks. But when I gave him Rover's eyes it just clicked.

I've been wanting to do some pics with him and his parents......too bad he doesn't remember anything about them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 23:31:21 +0000 UTC]

You did well in balancing them. It's easy to pick out, Rover has his eyes with her color, mostly his jaw, her nose, kinda both/neither of their mouths, halfway between both their cheek areas, etc. Nicely done!
Yeah, poor Rover. Though, wonder what his life would be like if he did remember them, and/or the other things.
I've kinda done faces some before. They're very fidgety, realistic or toony. Because we're so familiar with seeing faces, that the human eye instantly picks up on inconsistencies. I think my biggest concern is making a character look the same—defining their features, and knowing how to draw those same features—from all perspective and in all expressions, not having them look different and unrecognizable each time I draw them. Keeping it consistent.

LabelPerginu [2015-01-17 01:47:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear! Poor Rover, he looks so limp and lifeless….but thank goodness he's alive!!! And seeing him with that massive wound where his left arm used to be is heart-breaking ;~;

And I don't think you need a mature filter for this. Believe me, I've seen things more graphic than this o.o;;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to LabelPerginu [2015-01-17 06:44:17 +0000 UTC]

Alive. But just barely. With a fractured skull and that kind of blood loss the only reasons he hung on was that Soorn called for an emergency medical teleport and the Jssfloon are adept at dealing with hemorrhaging. Of course, he knows only what he has been told about the ordeal. His first memory is waking up in a Jssfloon hospital with a mechanical arm and a metal plate in his head.

Thanks.

LabelPerginu In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 17:49:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear, that must be scary. But thank goodness for Soorn! If it wasn't for his quick actions, Rover wouldn't have survived ;~;

And no problem

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to LabelPerginu [2015-01-17 22:38:48 +0000 UTC]

It was pretty confusing and disorienting. But he was a pretty brave kid. And his little disc drive and hat told him, if not where he came from at least who he was supposed to be.

He's a pretty good guy and like most Jssfloon a quick thinker. And he didn't just drop him off at the medical facility and leave it at that. Since he was the one that found him he feels a bit responsible for Rover.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LabelPerginu In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 23:42:02 +0000 UTC]

Awww, that would really explain his strong relationship with his western idols and, overall, humans…or whatever he has left of them.

Ahh, I figured he was the one who would be looking after him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to LabelPerginu [2015-01-18 00:17:48 +0000 UTC]

Exactly.

On Jssfloon children are all-important, so there are no such things as orphanages. Rover's case is a bit unusual because there is no home planet or family they can contact for him. Soorn was quick to volunteer to look after him.

I don't think there should be a 'mature' filter. At the very least, I think preteens can handle this okay.

Anyway, what a story! I really hope Rover at least gets to learn whatever might've happened to his parents...

chill13 In reply to HeroOfHeartJill [2015-01-17 06:52:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you think so. I wasn't sure. Because there admittedly I quite a bit of blood here.

Rover hopes so too. He doesn't really know anything about them. He only vaguely suspects that had parents. He must have. Most humans do after all. He has kind of given up trying to remember, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HeroOfHeartJill In reply to chill13 [2015-01-17 06:59:11 +0000 UTC]

Also, I just kinda realized this. He's the only human around? He hasn't seen other humans?

And at least he doesn't let that tragic thought drag him down. I suppose along the way if he ever finds out, it'd be great, but to be able to move on in life is a good attitude to have

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to HeroOfHeartJill [2015-01-17 07:08:51 +0000 UTC]

Surely he has at one time. But Rover has no memories before this crash. So for all intents and purposes, no. As far as he can recall he has never met another human.

It eats at him now and then. But not often. He doesn't let it keep him down. It just motivates him. There's got to be humans out there somewhere and he plan's to find them.

Yeah, at first, the 'finding the capsule bit' seemed like Superman, but more thinking directed me more 'Nah, it's Tarzan' XD

Either way, I still love your characters and your world. I almost wish I could be a part of it somehow, lol.

chill13 In reply to HeroOfHeartJill [2015-01-17 07:23:10 +0000 UTC]

Totally Tarzan. Although, Rover tries hard to be as human as possible--which to him means being a good cowboy-and is quite proud of his species even thought he doesn't know as much about them as he thinks he does. Tarzan was pretty happy trying to be an ape until humans kind of dropped in on him.

Lol! Well, you are perfectly welcome to address the characters directly....they might very well respond.

Usually the most compelling and emotionally realistic characters have something major in their backstory. Heroes rarely come from a nice, normal upbringing.
