The V5M was the first domestically produced rifle put into use by the Novian armed forces, coming into service six years after the end of the first civil war.

Utilizing a 5mm high velocity cartridge, the rifle was designed to defeat Earth Union standard combat armor while minimizing ammunition cost and weight. Compared the the Earth Union's "STORM" series of rifles, the V5M boasted better accuracy, reduced recoil, and improved reliability. However, this came at a cost. The V5M's per unit price was nearly double that of the STORM series, requiring higher quality components and a more precise manufacturing process.

Ultimately, the design proved effective, with numerous variants being produced throughout its long service life. Derivatives of the original design continued to see use well into the Second Renaissance.
