Description This is an acrylic painting I did some time ago. It's 13 X 19 inches so it's close to life size. I wanted the size to add to the realism (impact) of the piece. It's on illustration board. I've done two portraits of Jamie, this being the first. Neither of them are portraits in the strict sense, but both, by virtue of their content and mood are representative of her, to me. Hence, the title(s). Jamie liked origami. She was good at it. She was one of those Pisces gals that was great at anything and everything artistic which her whims moved her to try. I loved that about her. She made me this paper crane, stuck it in the headboard one morning before she left, which was one I'd made out of an old chain-link garden gate. It was beautiful there and inspired this painting some months later. Of all the paintings I've done over the years, this is one of my very favorites, if not my favorite. Favorite anythings are pretty difficult to nail down, but this would be on the short short list if the 'Favorite Nazis' had their Walthers to my head. The power visual repetition has is very alluring for me. There is something fascinating and satisfying in both painting, or viewing something over and over in one painting. Maybe it's just some of my compulsive behavior having it's way but there is some sort of peace in that order and cadence, however seemingly unnecessary.

I enjoy very much the contrast between the soft fragile texture of the origami crane attached to the cold, stern, linear chain link fence, their respective meanings, or the individual personalities, and their definiton as a singular entity, when we consider them as that, a relationship. It's probably representative of DDK's and Jamie's unique personalities, and maybe too, the dynamics of the relationship. Was he the cool, calculative one, just like what his simple 'chain link' geometry (mind set) attests to? while Jamie held and left her passions to ride her (while she rode her too), empower her and consume her, and that worked for her, that giving-up-wholly type of love that brought her to new territories of self and art? and although he seemed cold, he was still a fence, dependable, and tight in his ways, just like her, but in a good way, just like her? But somewhere along the line they figured out something was missing: did he figure out that she wasn't the missing link (if so he had one) and did she discover what was already given at the onset, that she can't tie down and reduce an open, practically endless fence into a pretty little confined piece of ingenuity?

I think this is absolutely brilliant both in concept and in execution.
I don't know how you can paint something like that without going crazy... Doesn't illicit very peaceful associations in me, but that's the beauty of art - everyone can interpret it as they see it.

That is AMAZING. The composition really gets the feeling of a special moment across, and being able to hear the story about it really brings it all together. I thought it was a photo at first, too--all the details are superb. How do you have the patience?

*faves*

Keep up the great work!

This is awesome. I really thought it was a photograph, until I read it was apiting. But besides that, I love the subject matter itself.. it's funny and interesting.

Thanks. Sometimes at shows people say "Oh, you do photography too" It's nice praise but humbling too because then I feel obliged to point out all the 'flaws' that demonstrate how non-photographic they can look to me. I wish I could loosen up sometimes enough to get more painterly. Take care. ----D

Hey thanks Dave. The fence was intimidating to take on and theres a fair amount of wavering if you look close but I felt really lucky when it was over. Have a good night. Talk to you soon. D---

Very inspiring, and full of meaning.

The paper crane and the fence make an incredibly realistic picture.

-The origami bird was caught in an endless life of repetition, but it liked it there.-
