What my granddad called the Soldiers Prayer - it varies but usually goes like this - "Dear Jesus don't let me die today and let me get this b.>a$%d before he gets me".

Funny you should ask, I'm working on illustrating a children's book involving hockey players at this very moment!

When I first saw this I gained an awesome idea for a picture of a WWI soldier running with a rosary in hand. Sadly I am terrible at drawing, but anyway this is a great picture.

Mostly, die trying. A sad tribute to Europe's failure to learn anything military from the lessons of the American Civil War. One of those is that bullets are far cheaper than the men they kill. Another is that it's extremely costly to assault an entrenched enemy. And the Europeans had a new defensive advantage, effective machine guns.

well done reminds me of that hauntingly horrible scene in Gallippoli where
the ALH use bayonets to hang letters off before sent into the slaughter of 'the Nek' during the murderous offensive of Aug 1915.
But then wasn't Haig the one who said if there is one German left and he has no gun and one Briton left and he does we have won. no matter the loss.
His 'Butchers Bills' at places like Ypres, Poizeres, Paschendale et al
destroyed a generation - however it has to be said that afterwards
people were a LOT less trusting of authority afterwards (at least in Aussie we were)
- geeee i wonder why.....

Although I've never been in that exact situation, I have been in similar ones. The thought goes something like this: "We're really goin' in. We might come out, we might not. Either way, we're gonna be heroes."
