Description Ok, so I've been nattering at people for months now about how my webcomic, Eversummer Eve, is getting a redesign and reboot (and even a different name). It's time to show some proof. So, here's Amadan, a sort of doodle done to experiment with some different things in Photoshop that I've decided I like and plan to keep playing with. The pose is copied from a famous old painting. If you recognize the pose, then that tells you just about everything you'd need to know about Amadan, really.

A lot of the redesigning I've been doing was in order to shake off all the 'Ooh, shiny!' stuff I'd picked up from different anime and manga, and get closer to the actual concept of the characters and the story. This is Amadan's redesign. It's not too different from the original, really, except that I tried to make him look more masculine. It was amazing, really, how many people seemed to think he was a girl. I blame that on the 'ooh, bishounen are shiny!' thing I'd picked up.

Amadan, in my mind, never came across quite properly in EsE to the way I'd originally imagined him. There was too much "Xellos" from "Slayers", and not enough...well, Amadan. I say I 'imagined' him, but really he sort of imagined himself, I think. I'd been looking for someone vampire-shaped to put in the story (this was way back before our culture got buried under a heap of the Undead, and vampires were still a New and Cool notion). And for some reason it just wasn't working. So there I was, beating my head against the vampire wall and having little luck. Now,a game called "Deadlands" had just come out, which as some of you may know is an RPG centered around a fantasy-themed Old West. (Think Brisco County, Jr. or Wild, Wild West.) A friend had just picked up this book and loaned it to me because he wanted to run a Deadlands game. It was while leafing through that book that the magic happened - I turned a page, was faced with a character archetype termed "the Huckster"...and suddenly Amadan was there, teleported straight into my head and looking pretty much the way you see him in the picture above. It was one of those strange, rare moments in life when everything seems to go wibbly for a moment and you somehow know that the thing that just happened is going to have a tremendous impact on you.

Amadan was originally going to be a minor character, sort of the way Drizzt Do'Urden was going to be a minor character for R. A. Salvatore. And then, like Drizzt, it turns out that Amadan isn't a minor character at all. He's a very main one. And although he isn't what I'd call an evil person...well, he is, after all, a huckster, and in his own way rather dangerous. I sort of think of him as what you might get if you crossed Puck with the Doctor. Hopefully that comes across better with the redesign.

He always struck as a Loki or Coyote variant, a trickster. Β The thing about tricksters is they tend to poke their fingers into everything, just to find out what happens!

Oh god, this is so nostalgic.Β  EsE was one of my first webcomics and I loved it to death.Β  I know it's probably never coming back, but tonight I got all nostalgic and googled it and found this concept art and ahhhhh I miss it all over again!

I hope you're doing well

Thanks for your kind comment, Rebochan! And thank you so much for still remembering Eversummer Eve. It's true that EsE is not coming back, but the good news is that I stopped it in order to step back, figure out what the heck I was really trying to do and say, and have been working on a sort of second draft of it for quite some time now. The main characters will be coming back in a new comic with a different title, in colour. (With hopefully better art and storytelling.) Many of them will have changed a little bit (or a lot), but in essence they are still the same people, and now I know what story I wanted to tell (rather than the sort of fill-in-until-I-figure-it-out one I was going with before. ( Hint: I am inspired a lot by the storytelling in the anime "Vision of Escaflowne", and have been dissecting it down to its bones to see how the studio worked its magick there. What's life without a challenge? Β  )

Amadan is still much the same. Even more so than before, I think.

Cheers!

Amadan is literally what inspired my love of the "dandy" type characters.Β  I'm glad to hear the characters might be coming back in some form.Β  As soon as they do, I will SO be there

Reboot of EsE? I'll be reading it!

I think Amadan in this pic looks more manly and more of trickster here than in the webcomic. And I like that.

Aww, that's a pity, I liked "Bishonen" Amadan, loved him in fact. So mischievous and tricksy, more fae then 'human' in appearance.

But I see where your heading with his new look, it will take getting used to but he's still Amadan.

I might be late to the show, but I just wanted to let you know that I am achingly anticipating the remake for Eversummer Eve <333 It was my very first webcomic as a kid and it holds a very dear place in my heart! I still love it to bits Amadan is my favourite character, so seeing his redesign makes me so happy! He looks awesome here!
I can't wait to see what other characters look like, and what the story will now tell :'D

I'm glad to hear that you're re-booting Eversummers Eve. I really did enjoy it back then as you had some great storytelling going on and I look forward to seeing it reimagined.

And I think most folks do go and try different "shiny" things before finding their own way. Best wishes and I'll be sure to keep an eye on you.

Thanks, and thanks for the words of understanding. It's weird how sometimes you feel like you should just sort of spring out into the world as a fully fledged artist with your own style - it's social pressure I guess, or something like that - but really it just doesn't happen that way.

jipy In reply to DeniseSJones [2011-02-15 04:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I can imagine it is like that since art has its trends and various places have their own culture and preferences. It's hard to balance the dabbling with new/popular stuff with being one's own artist.

I've been having a bit of a conversation with someone I work with on the balance of having one's style and emulating/learning from others...just making what one admires in other people's work part of your own work. (In the end that whole conversation has a spiritual bent.)

I think many of the best characters were originally supposed to be minor characters. Krin and Molly both were, the former in support of an RPG and the latter I hadn't really planned to flesh out (no pun intended...) as much as I did other than being Krin's sister. It's good to hear Amadan's other story.

Where might one find this rebooted comic? I was looking up Eversummer Eve today, but on your old website (eversummereve.com) I could only find one page and a good deal of non-linked things (not broken links, but like, no links apparently coded). I'd also be interested in archives, but it seems WirePop doesn't exist anymore.

DeniseSJones In reply to arcanetrivia [2014-05-08 18:13:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is currently working its way through the second draft stage in my notebooks and sketchbooks. The fortunate part in this is that the rebooted comic will be under a different name when it launches, so hopefully this won't become a real problem.

What you found online is, apparently, what someone has decided to keep up on the internet after I very foolishly allowed my ownership of the domain name eversummereve.com to expire - on account of it was spendy and I didn't think I really needed it anymore. What happened is, someone else purchased the domain, and then took careful steps to make sure their identity remained anonymous. For a while they kept just a couple of the pages that could be found stored on the Wayback site online, and added a little link pharm at the bottom - so basically, it was a scam. I sent a DMCA takedown request to the site host, and my pages were removed, only to be later replaced by a page that seemed to belong to a defunct business that sold specialty auto parts - and again, with the link pharm. And now, apparently, my original pages are up again. I appreciate you letting me know. Going through them, I can't find any more signs of a link pharm, and the original code in the main page, at least, seems to be clean, so I think I might just let this sit for now. I guess it might be a good time to see if it's possible to buy the domain back from whoever currently has it, since whois tells me that it's registered through GoDaddy now, and GoDaddy is offering that option.

So anyway, sorry for the confusion. I really appreciate your remembering my webcomic! There will definitely be announcements both here on my deviant page and on my Tumblr (Β dionysiajones.tumblr.com/ ) when the reboot goes live, so I hope you will keep watching and check it out. Thanks for contacting me!
