Description The steamship Pacifica.
SS Pacifica is operates as a part of the Australian merchant navy un-officially and flies that flag along with the RSC pendant and the US flag indicating her destination.

She is a twin screw liner powered by two steam fed from three boiler rooms on G deck with top of casings on F deck which is primarily used for frieght and passenger baggage storage.

On the boat deck affixed on either side are 8 wooden lifeboats of the clinker style covered with canvas. Each has emergency rations, oars, a mast and a primitive radio.
Each have the capacity for about 55 passengers.
In total the lifeboats on the boat deck and those food on the Poop deck have a capacity for 550 souls. On top of the bridge are two collapsible type boats with the capacity for 50 passengers which brings up total boat capacity of 650 souls.
Although this is only half of the amount of passengers carried by the liner as built (1,560), she has since had her third class cabins converted into Tourist Class Third Cabin and all First and Second class cabins are now provided with Air conditioning and private lavatories. This brings the maximum passengers possible to be transported to 1, 200 souls, less than the boat capacity but deemed suitable for the ships intended role of cruising.

The Bridge forward contains the wheelhouse and behind that the Marconi/Radio room. This room is now also retrofitted with Radar though this image shows the ship before conversion.

The next deckhouse contains the Captains cabin.

Between the first and second funnels is a casing that covers the dome of the Grand Staircase which descends from A deck down to F.

The rearmost deckhouse contains the gymnasium and the mens smoking room.

A Deck contains the officers quarters, First Class cabins and the First class dining room. This deck has expansive promenade area with cabins openning out onto the deck.

B Deck contains no portholes or promenades but does have an expansive deck area immeadiatly aft towards the Poop Deck.
On this deck Second Class cabins can be found as well as the Second Class Dining room, First/Second class reading and writing room and galleys for First and Second Class dining rooms.

C deck (also known as the Shelter deck) includes the Well deck and forward castle. On this deck one can find the Tourist Third Cabin dining room and galley, The Sailors Bar and a few Tourist Third Cabins. On the Well deck are two electric cranes to assist in dockyard operations. The Well deck is off-limits to passengers as is the Prow of the vessel.

D deck contains the swimming pool and indoor tennis court as well as crew quarters and few Tourist Third Cabins.

E deck is the final passenger deck. On this deck only Tourist Third Cabins can be found.

The ships hull is divided into 8 watertight compartments and a collision bulkhead in the bow. Most bulkheads go up to the Shelter deck but three of them only ascend as for as E deck.

In theory the ship could remain afloat with two compartments flooded but it has not been tested wether the pumps could cope with extra influx of water or wether the watertight door systems can be closed in times of electrical failure.

The ships Grand Staircase is flanked by two escalators that can only be used by the First Class passengers and senior crew members.

In the boiler rooms, most of the men are homeless and live aboard ship in times of port. Total crew onboard is 280.

The ships engines are of the Quadruple Expansion type and she has an operational speed of 18 knots but she reached as high as 22 knots in speed trials.

The ships dimensions are;
570ft (174.1m) in Length
65.5ft (19.99m) in Beam
Displacement of 14,191 GRT

She was built at Harland and Wolff and launched in 1907. She entered service with White Star for two years but was quickly deemed un-suitable and sold to an Australian shipping firm where she has remained ever since.

well this ship is designed to ply similar routes only with a smaller company as operator who cant afford the expense of running a larger vessel

well the Empress of Ireland was indeed a major source of inspiration for this.
That layout looks pretty nice but it has become almost forgotten

No, I don't think Empress has been forgotten.

well the fact she sunk so soon before WW1 has meant that she is not as well remembered as the bigger, more luxurious liners

Well if you've seen my drawing of the R.M.S. Alexandria (Five funnel steamer, interesting background story about a bomb plot, read comment) that's my next work to do.
Then maybe some aircraft. WWI first

Very nice. Hey, I was thinking, just as a friend, that I can commission the story of the Alexandria. If you give me the general plot line, I can give you ten chapters in a few weeks. I'm really good at developing plotlines and fictional stories.

I'll do it for free! I'm a teenager. I don't have a credit card, let alone a bank account. Just our shared love for ships is payment enough.

I dont have a credit card either.
Well the ship is [link] and the story is in the comment or rather, the outline.

---

launched in 1910, The R.M.S. 'Alexandria' of the British based 'Neptune Line' quickly eclipsed Cunards' Lusitania and Mauritania in terms of size and luxury. named after the Tsaress of Russia, she is almost the three times the length of her british rivals. She has five funnels to assert her dominance.

Capable of carrying upwards of 3,000 passengers from Liverpool to New York in under 6 days, she is a technological masterpiece.

While her british company basks in her glory, an american shipping line, Hale, is out for revenge. The previous holders of the Blue Ribband and the ex-largest transatlantic line, they are unhappy about the cut into thier profits the Alexandria is causing.
The heads of the Hale Line devise a cunning plan to solve the threat once and for all. With a team of agents serving as crewmembers aboard the Alexandria, all they need is some way to sink the ship and ruin the neptune Lines' reputation. They have the perfect bomb. All they need to do is get it aboard...

---

This all takes place during 1911 while the Titanic and Olympic are under construction but not launched.

I have an idea that it could follow two characters points of view.
One of them being a member (possibily the leader) of the group out to plant the bomb (I had the idea of besides the Bulkhead between Boiler Room 8 and the Cargo Hold with bunker in between to make secondary explosion out of coal dust) and the other character either a passenger, detective or some such that finds out about the plot and attempts to stop it.

The outcome (Wether bomb goes off/ if ship sinks or not) is up to you

Now I have a few questions and a comment.
1. Does she have turbines or reciprocating engines?
2. How many lifeboats does she carry? Are there enough for everyone?
3. I've tripled the length of the Lusitania. 2,100 feet seems a little excessive and very unlikely in 1911. I'm merely trying to be realistic.
4. Can I create the specs for her? I have some ideas that you might be pleased with.
5. How many propellers should she have? Three, four, or six?

Respond as fast as possible, and I can deliver her specs to you in a few days. Much thanks.

Denodon In reply to Steamer442 [2009-08-29 04:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Alright, I shall answer as best I can.

She is of triple screw propulsion driving four bladed props in similar arrangement to Titanic including engine layout (Two reciprocating quadruple expansion steam engines powering wing props and turbine in centre but unlike Titanic centre one can go into reverse).

As for boats, she has 12 on either side of boat deck of wooden clinker style with capacity for 75 Passengers each and a further four boats of same style on the poop deck.
Although I havent drawn the ship fully, cross Lusitania with Titanic to get basic appearance (more Lusitania shaped stern decks).
She also carries six collapsibles with 35 passenger seats each above deck houses either side of domed artirum/grand stairway.
This gives total capacity for 1410 souls.
The ship can carry 2800 passengers and 1080 crew so clearly not enough but ship is sceduled for extra boats to be added next dry-docking in 1913.
As for ships length, shes actually more likely to be about equal in length to the Queen Elizibeth but you can work with specs if you like. After all, Olympic and Titanic have been delayed due to belfast strikes and Olympic wont be launched until 1914

The ship was indeed inspired by the Titanic as that is by far my most favorite ship, followed by the Lusitania. That info is a mix between Titanic, Empress of Ireland and my own ideas

[link] That is the Lusitania. A story I find as interesting as the Titanics.

From the Titanic, I like the shape of the sheerline and the layout of the deck spaces. I also like the classic ocean liner look about it
