Thank you so much, Gesine. Our neighborhood looks really nice when it snows, and in spring when everyone's front yard begins to blossom. The rest of the time, it's kind of ordinary. But I like living here very much.

Thank you! I had to tone down that orange from the street lights, but it turned out pretty good.

Thank you so much! Our street seems to be very quiet, not too many cars. We live 1/2 block from a large highway, but you would never guess it. The neighborhood's many trees help keep the noise down.

I wish we would get another more decent snowfall, but despite all the cold, gray weather, all we will get is a few flurries, probably.

Thank you. I hope you get some snow to make it pretty, but not so much as to foul up traffic!

Thank you, Lori. I like our neighborhood! Our neighbors are friendly (not pests, though), and like to stay involved in local government. Everyone on our street tries to keep a neat yard, too, so that's a real bonus.

That's great....our neighborhood is more spacious and the neighbors aren't friendly and most of them don't keep up with their yards. I live on the outskirts of town so that's probably why and in hicksville compared to where I use to live in Chicago LOL

There are areas in our neighborhood where yards look pretty disreputable. But for some strange reason, our particular street looks good. And there's no pressure on anyone to do anything, so it's kind of a volunteer spirit, I guess.

Thank you very much. I've lived here for 35 years, and it's always been a nice street. The neighbors are decent and friendly, so you can't ask for more than that!

IT's funny you should mention that. There are several families with kids on my street, but you hardly ever see them! Years ago, it was common to see kids out playing ball in the street or messing around in their yards, etc. They were highly visible and voluble. In the last 10 years or so, kids went inside. They do things together, but it's more structured and supervised by adults.
My neighbors, on either side of me, are wonderful parents! They go everywhere with the kids, though, and there's little opportunity for the young ones to try things out on their own, experiment some. When I was a kid 55 years ago (!), on the weekends, parents set us loose and we played until lunch; then we went out and played until dark. We totally did what we wanted, occasionally go into trouble, or hurt ourselves riding bikes and chasing around.
I think those were wonderful years, and I am sorry that kids don't seem to have those same opportunities now. And yet, I understand parents' concerns. the world is a lot rougher and meaner than it was in 1950; there are horrible things going on everywhere, all the time. If I were a parent, I would probably keep a very close watch on my kids, too. It's sad it came to this, I think.

You know, me and my mom was talking about this just last week! LOL
I told my kids that when my brother and I were kids...we were barely ever board...we played all day...like you...and our mom would be calling us in for dinner in the evening because we were always playing...sometimes we were getting in troubble for being gone too long, or playing too much when there were things to do. But now? My children seem to want me to find things for them to do, because they are always "board" or want entertained. We as children always asked to go play outside...and now children are asking to play video games or watch TV all the time..and that bothers me. I think technology has made many kids not want to be active and play...and like you said also, about our world being much more dangerous with the crime increase, and the way society has become...yes, it is hard to let the kids run, knowing that someone might kidnapp them, or get ran over because people are careless on the street? My husband got onto the Sherriff site in our county, and found that there were over 30 sexual crime registered offenders withing 5 block radious of our house! Now the site does not tell you if they have been charged with child molestation or anything...but it makes you wonder if some of those registered offenders have done the very crime / or could possiably get a hold of a child around here.
Thats real scary.
Its a shame that society is this way, I don't really believe that anyone is as safe as they used to be..I agree with what you say.

I know what you mean. Video games and the Internet are a blessing and a curse at the same time. I love what we can do with the internet, but I think people can become isolated from "real face time" with neighbors, friends, relatives, etc. There's a place for both, and balance is the key. But too many youngsters and their parents have a hard time finding balance (I do, too!), and tend to stay on the internet too long. One of the worst things to come out of kids not playing outdoors any more is the terrible epidemic of childhood obesity. It's so sad that youngsters are gaining weight at a very early age, and may be afflicted with diabetes, high blood pressure and other systemic diseases even while in their teens and 20s. The thing that kept us kids healthy was all that activity, plus NO readily available snacks. Mom would give me some milk and 2 cookies in the afternoon, and that was it. We had regular servings at all three meals. I don't ever remember being hungry or needing to lose or gain weight. And everyone was like that! We were all so slender back then! With snack and soda vending machines everywhere you look, including schools, no wonder kids are having a hard time of it. Things are definitely stacked against us being healthy, that's for sure.
And you mention sex offenders. We looked at the police website for registered sex offenders in our area, and found 5 within several blocks! Some of them had been charged with rape. It makes you think twice about going for that evening walk!
I think many things were better in the old days, and I'm starting to feel like an old grouch!

I was glad to see it come (the first snowfall is always exciting), but it's melting away now, and that's just as well. I don't like shoveling the stuff, that's for sure.

I know how you feel about shoveling. I feel exactly the same. We have had a few light accumulations of the white stuff lately, over night. Doesn't mess up the roads for the morning drive and it's gone shortly after the sun comes up. Now that's my idea of a considerate snow.

I like that sound, too. Snow falling seems to muffle all sounds and cover all sins. It's so beautiful for about a day, then it gets all tarnished with the trappings of civilization!

Oh I love that feeling! We used to cheer and shout when we had snow days! Today, I heard the kids yelling and screaming over at the local school; they were sliding down a long, snowy/icy hill on their sleds. That just looked like so much fun, I wanted to join them!

Thanks, Ginny. I set the white balance to "fluorescent" and that seemed to squelch the really loud orange from the lamps. I think it looks softer, which is better than a screaming orange any day!
