Yeah, only because he was stupid.... That sounds really childish, but still. He kept trying to escape when he had ONE YEAR left to serve. Then he gets another 4 whenever they catch him. Okay, yes, 5 years is a bit much for stealing a loaf of bread, but they also slammed him for breaking and entering, destruction of private property and resisting arrest.
Ummm.... can you tell i've read the book a few too many times? Is 4 times too much? I disect this thing too much.
But still, i love the way you draw Javert. Especially the last panel. So sad! He needs a hug.

you can never read a good book too many times! =]
though you are kind of right about jean. maybe all those break-out attempts seemed fool-proof at the time.
hoowwever, i feel i have to challenge you to a duel for insulting Jean Valjean to protect his honor. *slaps with glove* engarde, good sir! (i know, you're probably female, but "good, madame" isn't as affective.)

This is true.
Surely you'd try to escape at the beginning, rather than right near the end? Pfft! Honour. He had no honour until the Bishop bought it for him. I choose swords at mid-afternoon! (i realise pistols at dawn is traditional, but i have terrible aim and no way am i going to be up at that hour.) And yes i am female.

*slaps with glove again*
agreed! jean must be avenged! (and then we will go out for cactus juice afterwards to fangirl over the book. =])
but are redemption and thus hope not what Jean Valjean represents?
(also, i've been rereading parts of the book and Hugo actually describes Jean's multiple stupid attempts at escape as like the wolf's instinct taking over logic when he sees his cage door briefly open. Then, when caught, Jean's frustration made him even more bitter. so the escapes were more impulse than actually thought-out.)

*slaps you with gauntlet, just for the one-up-manship*
Yay for cactus juice and having someone to fangirl with!
Like i said; stupid. Intelligence needs to overcome instinct. He's lucky they never just shot him. Then how would the story have progressed? Interesting hypothetical, take Valjean out of the equation, and where do you think the other charaters would have ended up?

exactly! everyone would have been totally screwed! maybe one of the other things Jean represents is one man having the ability to make a difference. oh, crap! i should have put /that/ in my essay! dammit.
at any rate, i'll see you at high noon. *starts playing "the good, the bad, and the ugly" theme*

*Gets Batman to punch you in the face. He wins. Why? Because he's the Goddanm Batman!*
it's just none of them could conceivably come into contact with each other any other way.
Fantine would never have started working in the factory, never been fired and never become a prostitute, and could probably gained employment elsewhere, collected Cosette and raised her herself. Cosette would have married the farmer's boy from down the road.
Javert would have continued to do his job extremely well, and not bothered chasing a convict (or THAT particular convict) and would have made Prefect of Police before he was 50, ignoring any and all attempts to get him to retire, eventually dying of old age.
Marius would have gone along happily with the Revolution and probably been killed at the barricades.
UUUUuuhhh... i think i may have slept through high noon, because i have developed the annoying talent of being able to turn off my alarm in my sleep... reschedule for next week?

xD CURSE YOU, BATMAN! *waits for you to turn around to gloat and then has Javert hit you with his nightstick*
I disagree. I think things would have been way worse. I mean, the factory was there before Jean so Fantine would still have gotten work there, been fired, and forced to become a prostitute and stuff. However, there would be no one to save her from Javert. She would go to jail and die. Then Cosette would be royally screwed and stuck with the Thenardiers, where she would be horribly abused and either die or be forced to become a prostitute or something like that. Marius would die at the barricades. M. Gillenormand would die in horrible sadness b/c he'd never see Marius again. Fauchelevent would die under the cart. That sailor Jean saved would die. Even Javert would be killed at the barricades. In fact, the only people that wouldn't be screwed by the whole deal are the Thenardiers.
Take /that/!
*Glares, then takes out appointment book.* Alright, I can pencil in our duel to the death sometime next week. But you'd better not be late!

*Has Batman tie Javert up somewhere, then leaves, giving me ample opportunity to mentally undress the inspector, thinking out loud while doing so, making him very uncomfortable. Also have Robin tie up Valjean so no one comes to Javert's rescue*
My point stands; The factory was there, but it was under-productive. Chances are it would have closed down a long time ago, and the townspeople would have gone elsewhere for work. M. Gillenormand deserves to die alone for being an ass to Marius. And if my prediction were accurate, Javert would have been in the top-job by the time the Revolution broke out, and would have assigned someone else to go. Then he'd have to write the "I'm sorry for your loss, here are your son/husband's effects" to the next of kin.
*Snerk* i won't be late, but you will be 'late' afterward. Hee, i'm so witty.

*(ch, you think /Robin/ could take Jean Valjean?) Robin fails miserably at defeating Jean, but Jean is so awesome he saves Robin from Batman (who, let's face it, is kind of a dick). Jean and Robin then team up to fight crime in the slums of Paris. Meanwhile, Gavroche and his British counterpart, the Artful Dodger, team up to pick your pockets.
As for Javert... eh, I'll leave him to you. He had it coming. x]*
I think you make going elsewhere for work sound a lot easier than it was in nineteenth century France, i mean, didn't Fantine prove that? She certainly wasn't able to just go elsewhere for work. I think the people in the town would have been screwed too.
aw, but i like M. Gillenormand. And why does Marius deserve to die? i mean, i know he's kind of a dumbass, but does that merit him death?
I don't think Javert's job progression was that greatly affected by Jean, so you can't say for sure he wouldn't be at the barricade.
and what about that sailor? and fauchelevent? even if your point does stand, they'd've been killed.
damn you and your puns. i assure you that i will be victorious! (consequently, are we allowed to bring fictional character back-up? i think we should. i call Jean and Iroh! (hooray, badass old guys!)

Depends entirely on which Robin (there were 3 of them after all)Dick Grayson could (Batman Gen 2/Nightwing), Jason Todd HAHAHAHAHAHAH No, Tim Drake Maaayyybe. And good luck to the pick-pockets. all i had in there was a mouse trap and some spare buttons. What? I LIKE buttons...
This is true. Also depends how far it is to the next town, and whether you or someone you know has transport. If a lot of people leave at once, they tend to load people into carts and stuff, and have a mass exodus.
Maius's death raised the average IQ of France. I am still in favour of taking the warning lables off everything and letting natural selection take its course. Just because i'm a little sick of the 'Nanny state'.
Javert did hurt his reputation kinda badly when he denounced the Mayor as an ex con. But i imagine he would have got those points back when they found out he was right.
One person can affect the world in such minute ways, There's a chance Fauchelevent would have already left the town by then. The sailor might have been rescued by someone else, or become a statistic.
If we're resorting to fictional character back-up, i'm bringing the Scarecrow from the Batman comics (Specifically Scarecrow Year One version. He's pretty) and The Phantom of the Opera.

well, maybe Dick when he grew up to become Nightwing, but either way, the awesome is still clearly in Jean's favor.
Well Dodger runs off with your precious buttons, and Gavroche sits down and makes faces at Javert (poor guy just can't seem to get a break).
I don't mass exodus was an option for these people.
well, maybe your right about Marius, but, crap, there has to be /one/ reason he doesn't suck...give me a minute.
Yes there is a chance Fauvent would have left, but I doubt it. Additionally, is becoming a statistic really a justification for allowing someone to die? Because nobody else was saving him, that's for sure.
hmph, psychological warfare isn't very nice, but we'll take him. and the Phantom's not a problem for Jean and Iroh. What's he gonna do, sing at them?
Alsooo, hmmm, you think the Joker could take Scarecrow or is he just a more interesting villain?
