I like to say y'all (I'm southern)...I say it often. I also like correct grammar. "Y'all" is slang, therefore it is alright to use in writing and speaking.

I say people should worry about something that actually matters.

Yeah, we've all been high strung at once, just gotta let it go and realize what's more important.

I have to say, I'm *sometimes* a grammar nazi, but that seems like too much for me. It's DIALECT, people. JK Rowling used the non-word word "Dunno" in her books, along with things like "Er..." and "Um..."

No, they're not technically words. But it's how people speak. Writers use them all the time because it would be awkward and boring if EVERYONE in a story spoke in perfect English.

I just laugh the people that freak out off. They wouldn't survive in the South. xD

I do agree that them threatening to kill the ST and generally being asshats about such a simple thing - that was completely offtopic of the secret - was rude and pointless.

The thing is... that person wasn't really what I could call a Grammar Nazi.
Because using words like "y'all" or "anyways" or "wtf" or "fantabulous" or "gawjus", that's just slang, it has nothing to do with improper grammar, it's a different thing.

I call myself a Grammar Nazi usually (even though my English isn't perfect either), but slang doesn't bother me at all (in fact I use it quite a bit too ). The things that bother me are when people use they're/their the wrong way, when they say 'defiantly' instead of 'definitely' and so on. That limits, of course, only to native English speakers (simply because I think one should at least know their own language correctly), I would never complain about someone's English when it's not their primary language.

Oh and also, the person you mentioned in the secret was also quite rude. I believe one can be a polite and helpful Grammar "Nazi".

I'm a grammar 'Nazi' (sounds kind of evil now I think about it) but I think 'Y'all' is acceptable. It is an abbreviation just like 'It's' 'Doesn't' etc.

Floofeh-Kitteh [2009-07-22 08:55:42 +0000 UTC]

Considering people say "y'all" out loud, I think that's rather rude of those two commenters. It wasn't a mispelling, but an abbreviation. What, you gonna go around saying "*it is" when people write "it's" in their secrets now? -_-; I can't believe people are taking this so far...

I'm a grammer nazi though i usually try not to judge too much here on DAS...but the example in the secret seems perfectly fine to me. More like a dialect difference than the difference between you're and your etc.. (which really kills my eyes )
Anyway if I can ignore most spelling/grammer/typos then so can other people (though i wish people proof read! )

I'm just choking on my pizza laughing right now. It's so obvious you're trying to seem really educated, like you know how to write formal English, but your secret is so awkward and stilted it's really plain to see that you don't.

By the way, "its" is posessive. "It is" is abbreviated "it's."

TwistedAlice In reply to ShadowNeko13 [2009-07-22 09:17:28 +0000 UTC]

DAS asks people to not correct spellings etc on secrets. It is called following the rules.

verdades In reply to ShadowNeko13 [2009-07-22 00:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Unless I'm mistaken, the ST is also trying to say that they're not one of the grammar nazis.

While this correction is slightly more appropriate than those referenced in the secret, it wasn't necessary for this secret. The secret teller is telling grammar nazis to go somewhere else, not reply on their secret.

ShadowNeko13 In reply to verdades [2009-07-22 01:21:18 +0000 UTC]

But saying stuff like that, with poor grammar, is just BEGGING to be called out on.

And frankly, if it came down to pointing out the usage of the colloquialism "y'all" or the incorrect usage of "its" as opposed to "it's", I would go for the second one- it's a serious error. I'm sorry but the world needs grammar nazis, because an entire generation is growing up learning that
typin lyk dis omg <3<3<3 hes so cuuuuute! luv u 2!
0r lik3 th!s n00b I pwn u
is an acceptable and appropriate way of expressing yourself. Or, they're just never being taught how to express themselves in a well-educated, formal manner, and that's a tragedy.

*wiggles hand*
May or may not be that the ST did it intentionally. I just didn't like the way you phrased your reaction to it, actually xD. Because of the difference between correcting, or "HAHAHA YOU FAIL" correcting, and you were closer to the latter.
As for the rest of it, I do quite agree. You forgot the random capitalisation, though.
TyPiNg LyK DiS, etc.
The 1337 speak as opposed to the above, though, I know people who normally spell and type correctly who just do that for the laughs.
I guess the line should be drawn on whether or not the user is capable of typing correctly. By which method, perhaps half the 1337 speakers would be safe, and that'd be about it.

*ponders*
Yay ramble?

I think "y'all" as a spoken word is fine, but it irritates me for some reason as a written word. But I do live in England, so I never hear it or see it, so it always appears odd to me.

I think it's important to appreciate language in its official form, because if we didn't, it would just deteriorate in a pile of slang (think how it has regressed from Shakespeare's day to now). I wish it was still like that. What a waste of something pretty.

In the south, the word y'all is as commonplace as "the" or "I" in speech. I mean, I use correct grammar when I write, but when I speak I use the word "y'all" all the time. I was just raised with it being the word for "you all".

AnnaKlava [2009-07-21 22:25:22 +0000 UTC]

I have no problem with "y'all" I'm sure most don't either. I notice a lot of people down south use this word. (I'm not sure where else it's used and anyone else please tell me)

If someone wished death upon you, I think they're just stuck back in the Civil War and hate Southerners.

In all seriousness I agree that it's uncalled for to wish death on someone for such a petty reason.

Leahh23 [2009-07-21 21:28:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm probably a grammer nazi, but I could not care less about shortening words. Shortening "You all" to "Y'all", is the same as shortening "You are" to "You're" to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

kitcatbar43 [2009-07-21 21:17:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't care about people using the word "y'all" because I never hear nor see people using it.

However, when people use poor grammar I find that what they were trying to say loses depth and meaning.

But I never point it out on a secret. The person expressing the secret is probably already feeling poorly, so why point out something like that?

I'm not trying to be a "Grammar Nazi" or anything, but try reading your secret out loud if you're alone. You can notice the mistakes more easily, and then no one will point out your errors.

But, ST being that laidback is fine - on the Internet. In work environments and in schools, poor grammar is generally frowned upon.

Agreeeed. D8 I'm a Texan. It may sound stereotypical, but I say y'all a LOT. I mean, I don't even think about it. xD It's just so easy to use! :3 I don't use it when I'm writing, because it feels awkward then, but if some people want to, who's to stop them? Up north, my spanish teacher says that they usually say you guys, but down here, some people will say 'I'm a girl' if you say that. It's easier to use y'all.

This is a kinda bad example, but up where my aunt lives, they call sodas 'op'. Where my youth director at church lives, they call all sodas 'coke'. Down here, we generally call it soda. Does it really matter?

horsygirl112 In reply to shayerahol22 [2009-07-22 01:53:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm Canadian and, stereotypically, also say "eh" a lot. It's a habit, I don't even realize I do it anymore. XD

And I call it soda, not pop. My boyfriend insists that that's not the "Canadian way to say it" and always tries to correct me when I say soda. He's not trying to be racist, but it's just funny.

I could really care less about people's grammar on the internet. Life isn't one big grammar test. I mean, short of people not making any sense, it doesn't bother me.

xDD Prolly only notice it when someone points it out. <3

It probably just varies depending on what region you live it. :3 It's not a big deal, but whenever you go somewhere else, it's always weird to hear different things. xP

Since I live down where it's warmer, we have Fire Ants, which are red and bite really hard, kinda like bees (I say this not to ridicule your intelligence, but because I'm not sure you've seen them). When I went up to Oregon, I was talking about them, and someone was like: O-o What's a fire ant?

Grammar, spelling... You generally start overlooking it after a while. ;D My RP buddy has atrocious spelling, but we tease each other about it a lot. ^^ So you're right, it's really no big deal.

I admit that I can be a bit of a Grammar Nazi at times, but there's a difference between pointing out someone's mistakes and being a total jackass about them. Like... "Hey, you used the wrong they're/their/there." and "OMFG YOU'RE SUCH AN IDIOT."
